Bricks To Save Water
Patty Paris-Miss Brick 173-representing the Massachusetts Masonry Institute, helps young volunteer David Huff of Longmeadow, Mass., get started on a water-saving project involving the entire town. In an effective spirit of conservation, young volunteers called on all homes in Longmeadow, delivering to each a brick to be placed in the toilet tank. It is estimated that the water displaced in the tank by the bricks will save 2,000 gallons of water per home annually. The bricks were donated by Springfield Local #1 of the BM & PIU.

In Memoriam

DOUGLAS WHITLOCK
The Brick Institute of America sadly reported the passing of Douglas Whitlock, BIA general counsel, who died of a heart attack on May 16 while on vacation in Portugal. Mr. Whitlock was 68.

In 1934 as a young Washington attorney, Mr. Whitlock amalgamated the four segments of the structural clay industry (clay tile, facing brick, common brick and paving brick) into a single organization called the Structural Clay Products Institute. This union marked the beginning of a coordinated brick and tile promotion, engineering and vocational training program that today operates under the name of Brick Institute of America.

As SCPI organizer and chairman, Mr. Whitlock became the industry leader and spokesman in many areas. For years, he spearheaded the industry's drive for equitable depletion legislation.

Also, he was extremely active in creating the Allied Masonry Council which for many years served as the promotional arm of the Masonry Industry. MCAA members and mason contractors, throughout the United States and Canada, will miss his intense desire to promote the Brick Industry and his vigorous efforts in the Bricklaying Apprenticeship Training Programs.

In commenting on Mr. Whitlock's passing. Richard W. Otterson, executive vice president of BIA, said: "Douglas Whitlock's influence and dedicated leadership has been a guiding force within the brick industry. There is no doubt that more than any other individual his counsel was sought, followed and implemented. His passing marks the end of an era but it created the foundation for the future."

H. MAYNE STANTON
Harlan Mayne Stanton, longtime executive secretary and consultant to the Building Construction Employers Association of Chicago (BCEA), died on April 7 following a heart attack. He was 81.

Mr. Stanton was born in Appleton, Minn. and attended the University of Minnesota Law School. For a time he served as part owner and editor of the Bemidji Daily Pioneer and, following a hitch with the U.S. Marines in World War I, became executive secretary of the Builders' Exchange of Duluth in 1921, a post he held until 1926.

That year he became manager of the Associated Builders of Chicago and continued in that capacity until 1943 when the group merged with the Builders' Association. He was selected executive secretary of the new organization. In 1946 he became executive secretary of the BCEA, from which he officially retired in 1971.

MORTON R. HUNTER
Morton R. Hunter, Sr., one of the founders of Associated Equipment Distributors and a pioneer of many construction equipment industry methods, died May 16 in Milwaukee's Columbia Hospital.

Hunter was known among his friends as "The Man with the Idea." He was credited with being the first to plow snow off roads, of being the originator of the gasoline powered concrete mixer, and also the first to use concrete mixers mounted on trucks.

Hunter founded the Hunter Machinery Co., Inc. of Milwaukee. He remained active in the management of his company until 1972 when illness forced him into semi-retirement.
