DESIGN CANADA MASONRY AWARDS

Faculty Club, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ont. Architects: Mathers & Haldenby, Toronto, Ont. Mason Contractor: George & Asmussen Ltd., Kitchener, Ont. The building offers dining, lounge and bar facilities with an intimate club atmosphere. Exterior is of earthy brick with a sloping roof rising skyward at different angles. Exposed brick also is utilized in the foyer and entrance vestibule.
Crestwood Medical-Dental Building, Richmond, B.C. Architects: The Gardiner Thornton Partnership, Vancouver, B.C. Mason Contractor: Alton & Nerheim Masonry Ltd., Vancouver. This structure attempts to produce a more humane environment for the practice of medicine with the use of such natural materials as brick, cedar and plantings. Eight-inch giant brick-bearing walls and columns are reinforced to provide lateral earthquake stability.
Tanners Crossing Elementary School, Minnedosa, Man. Architects: Number Ten Architectural Group, Winnipeg, Man. Mason Contractor: Midwest Masonry Ltd., Brandon, Man. This school features a configuration of open classroom space articulated by several ceiling heights. Exterior walls utilize a blended concrete brick veneer over a one-inch airspace.
Crystaplex Plastics Ltd. Office & Warehouse, Montreal North, Que. Architects: Moffat Moffat & Kinoshita, Toronto. Mason Contractor: Zanetti & Roy Inc., Montreal North. The building is located facing the street to provide interest and scale. Dark brown hand-moulded brick with colored mortar on concrete block back-up comprise the exterior materials.
Fischbach & Moore Office Building, Etobicoke, Ont. Architects: Fairfield-DuBois, Toronto. Mason Contractor: Pigott Construction Co. Ltd., Toronto. Here the insiders' views are controlled by having most of the building's windows face onto a walled, plant-filled courtyard. Walls are of Jumbo Junior clay tile. Greenery in and around the structure imparts humanizing qualities with the impact of natural things.
