ANSI President Urges Early Metric Legislation
Roy P. Trowbridge, president of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), told the Subcommittee on Science, Research and Development of the House Committee on Science and Astronautics that ANSI supports early congressional action aimed at establishing a well-defined policy on metric usage in the United States and authorizing the appointment of an official National Metric Conversion Board.

Trowbridge said that although ANSI generally favors the approach and provisions of House Resolution 1234 regarding metrication, he recommended that several of the bill's provisions be changed in the interest of a successful and largely voluntary conversion to metric in the United States. H.R. 1234 indicates that federal agencies should assume a special leadership role in metric conversion and that federal procurement activities should be utilized to encourage the general use of the metric system of measurement.
