Soloff Addresses BIA's 39th Annual Convention

MCAA President David B. "Mickey" Soloff, Jr. was one of the principal speakers at the Brick Institute of America's 39th annual convention at the Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., November 4-7.

Calling for unity among all industry organizations, Soloff told the delegates: "I believe that it is time for brick manufacturers, mason contractors and all elements of the masonry industry to establish a permanent and continuing channel of communication between their respective trade associations.

"It is time for us to create a way for all our masonry organizations to consult easily and quickly with each other, exchange information and pass on ideas.

"All of us," Soloff continued, "brick manufacturers, mason contractors and others, can benefit from a full exchange of ideas and information between our associations, and from an opportunity to fully discuss-before they become critical-our mutual problems."

"Masonry Row" Highlights Architects' Convention

A unique display dubbed "Masonry Row" was one of the highlights at the recent convention of the Minnesota Society of Architects. The row consisted of side-by-side display booths of nine firms associated with the masonry industry. "The exhibits resulted in greater attention for each participant and could well become a fixture at future conventions," commented Tom Richardson, executive director of the Minnesota Masonry Institute which acted as co-ordinator for the displays. The MMI staffed a booth in the row's center and demonstrated step-by-step construction of a composite block and brick wall and arch. Pictured here having a discussion at one of the displays are Dick Doolittle and "Mac" McNiece.

When asked if he knew the meaning of the word "operetta," an elementary school boy said, "Sure, it's a lady who works for the telephone company."
