Chicago Hosts Masonry Design Seminar

"We have yet to see a building that is consciously designed to conserve energy that costs more to construct." This striking statement was delivered by Walter A. Meisen, assistant commissioner of Public Building Services, General Services Administration, Washington, D.C., at an architectural seminar sponsored by the Metropolitan Chicago Masonry Council on October 1.

More than 400 architects and building professionals attended the day-long conference, "New Considerations in Masonry Design," at the new Hyatt Regency in downtown Chicago. Highly qualified speakers provided timely and needed information to interested designers at the seminar sponsored by the Metropolitan Chicago Masonry Council.

Keynote speaker Walter A. Meisen posed the energy dilemma and challenge to solutions.

Meisen reported at the afternoon session on recent governmental research projects in energy and cost savings which resulted in new GSA policy recommendations for energy-saving design. The morning session was devoted to loadbearing masonry design.

Alan H. Yorkdale, director of engineering & research for the Brick Institute of America, and Henry T. Toennies, vice president of technical services, National Concrete Masonry Association, both of Washington, D.C., shared the platform with Meisen to present basic concepts in load-bearing masonry and current developments regarding energy conservation in construction.

The Metropolitan Chicago Masonry Council represents a coalition of all segments of the masonry industry in metropolitan Chicago.
