IMI Holds Annual Promotion Meeting
Monterey, California
Key leaders involved in masonry promotion throughout North America were present for IMI's fourth Annual Promotion Meeting in the Del Monte Hyatt House, Monterey, Calif., July 10-12. At the meeting David B. Soloff, Jr., of Chattanooga, Tenn., MCAA Immediate Past-President, was elected Chairman of IMI. He replaces Donald R. Bidwell, of Plymouth Mich., MCAA Past-President, who has served IMI since its founding in July, 1970, and has seen it evolve as the industry's leading resource center and promotion arm.
"The 1974 meeting was especially noteworthy," according to IMI Executive Director Neal English, "for it drew officials and staff of nearly all local and regional masonry institutes in the United States and Canada, which are spin-offs of IMI as well as mason contractors, BM&PIU officials and industry representatives."
National trade associations that sent delegates to the meeting included: Brick Institute of America, National Concrete Masonry Association, Portland Cement Association, Expanded Shale, Clay & Slate Institute, and the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association.
Participants included such masonry-oriented firms as Dow Chemical's AMSPEC, Masonry Systems International, Owens-Corning Fiberglas BlocBond Division, and Hercules, Inc.
Delegates came from such distant points as Hawaii, British Columbia, the Atlantic Maritime Provinces of Canada, and Florida.
Timely topics discussed included masonry's qualities and economies in regard to energy conservation. The session was chaired by IMI Secretary-Treasurer George A. Miller. Speakers, whose presentations were rated outstanding by those in attendance, were: Alan Yorkdale, P.E., Director of Engineering for BIA, and Henry Toennies, P.E., Vice President of Technical Services for NCMA.
Another session that especially caught the interest of delegates was by two West Coast architects involved in (Please turn page)
