The opening session of IMI's fourth Annual Promotion Meeting featured a jam-packed, standing-room-only turnout. Here Ray Lackey of Henry J. Kaufman & Associates introduces a session on masonry loadbearing design.
what has been called by many as the "California style" of architecture. This type of design makes extensive use of wood, and most often it is in single-family or apartment type construction. The style has spread throughout the United States and into Canada as builders and developers keep searching for new ways to attract home and apartment buyers whose life styles have changed considerably in the past several years.
Using high-quality color slides of their design accomplishments, to illustrate how masonry can and should be an important element in the "California style," were: Barry Berkus of B. A. Berkus & Associates, and Craig Ellwood of Craig Ellwood Associates, both of Los Angeles. The session was chaired by IMI Trustee Eugene George of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.
At the California meeting IMI premiered its new slide show titled "Masonry Bearing Walls-A Rational Revolution in Design." It was produced with technical assistance of the engineering departments of NCMA and BIA to illustrate to architects and structural engineers what is involved in creating a loadbearing masonry system structure. The slide show is to be used in conjunction with IMI's new 17-minute, color motion picture filmed at locations throughout the world. Titled First Principles, the movie illustrates that loadbearing masonry need not be limited to certain building types but provides the economy, speed and flexibility to make it highly competitive with a wide range of products and adaptable to most building types. (The 24-minute slide show, including drum, recorded narration and script, is available through IMI for $35.)
When used with the film First Principles, the audio-visual package enables local and national groups to effectively and economically conduct a loadbearing masonry system seminar. It is recommended an architect or structural engineer of a successful local or nearby load-bearing project be selected to participate in such a seminar. By doing so technical questions raised by architects and engineers at the meeting can immediately be answered.
Available for distribution at loadbearing seminars are outstanding technical and pictorial publications produced by BIA and NCMA and available from them at modest cost. IMI offers to provide free of charge to contributing groups a listing of loadbearing aids currently available within the masonry industry.
Industry spokesmen and IMI Trustees and Advisors participated in other sessions titled: The Industry Promotion Program, Development of Local Programs and Associate-Member Funding, Audio-Visuals, Information Sharing Sessions, BIA & NCMA Promotion, New Building Systems, and Business Outlook.
