Spokane MCA Considers Promotional Programs
The Spokane Chapter of MCAA, while attending the meetings of the International Masonry Institute during MCAA's annual convention in Las Vegas last February, decided to investigate the possibility of developing a masonry promotion program in their city, now that Expo '74 is creating so much interest there.
Ray F. Wimer. Northwest field representative for MCAA, and Gene Salveson, executive director of the Masonry Institute of Washington, were invited to present a program on their local promotional programs for their members at a dinner meeting in May. Salveson discussed the panelization programs going on in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Wimer followed with an hour-long slide-narration about the Oregon Masonry Guild, of which he is executive director.
Mrs. Wimer was dinner guest of the mason contractors' wives during the men's business meeting. She was presented an orchid and was praised for her willing assistance at mason contractor functions in the Northwest, which she regularly attends with her husband.
Leroy Anderson, sales manager. Layrite Products Co., was master of ceremonies, with Russ Herman, president of the MCAA Spokane Chapter, arranging details for the evening.
Anderson announced that the University of Idaho School of Architecture was cooperating with his chapter by providing classroom time for students to explore the masonry design story. He added that he was making plans to develop a like relationship with the Architectural School of Washington State University using literature and materials developed by IMI.
Hertz Rental Wins Awards from Lull

Jerry York, Hertz Equipment Rental president, and Harold Wilson, Hertz southeast regional vice president, accepted the trophy from Orrin Nord, Lull's vice president-sales, in a presentation ceremony in Tampa. Hertz was appointed a Lull distributor in 1971.
GSA Observes 25th Year
The U.S. General Services Administration observed its 25th anniversary in July with special activities and opportunities for employes to "examine our progress and set goals for our future."
In a message to GSA's 40,000 employes nationwide, administrator Arthur F. Sampson said this month-long observance should "give us all a chance to share the agency's operations and record with pride, to understand GSA's new vision and to face further challenges."
In Memorium WINFIELD S. HOLLAND
Delegates to IMI's fourth Annual Promotion Meeting were shocked and saddened at the loss of Winfield S. Holland, 50, executive director of the Masonry Institute of Washington, D.C., who was stricken with a heart attack during the closing session of the meeting on July 12. The day before he had participated in the Information Sharing Session and was given an enthusiastic round of applause for the highly-creative masonry radio commercial which he had produced and successfully used on Washington radio stations.
He is survived by his wife, Winifred, of Annapolis, Md.; a daughter, Judith W. Holland, of London, England; two stepsons, John S. Shirreffs of San Lamont, Calif., and Michael S. Shirreffs of Annapolis; a brother, James, of Cleveland; and a sister, Jean Griffin, of Melrose Heights, Mass.
The masonry industry has lost a great talent and friend, and he will be missed as an individual as well as a masonry promotion leader.
