# IMI Promotes Masonry to Millions by Sponsoring David Brinkley Show
Millions of Americans who previously might not have known the difference between a brick and a concrete block are now getting a quick education every weeknight on the advantages of masonry construction. The "students" are the millions who listen to David Brinkley Reports, an NBC Radio Network show broadcast coast-to-coast on more than 200 stations. The "teacher" is the International Masonry Institute, which began sponsorship of Brinkley's show on April 15th with commercials on the fire safety and energy conservation advantages of masonry construction and the beauty of the finished product.
"IMI's participation in the Brinkley show," said IMI Executive Director Neal English, "represents the first time that any masonry promotion organization has broadcast commercials coast-to-coast. We think the commercials, which are factual and hard-selling, will be of tremendous benefit in raising the consciousness of the general consumer toward buildings and the materials that go into their construction."
English pointed out that most people hadn't paid much attention in the past to construction materials when they leased a new apartment or office or took a new job. "Fire safety and energy conservation are in the news now," English said, "and IMI thought it would be very appropriate to cash in on masonry's very distinct advantages in these areas.
"One of our new commercials, for example, tells people not to panic in case of a fire but, instead, to head for the safety of masonry compartments and stairwells. If they're already living or working in a masonry building, or a building with properly ventilated or smoke-proofed masonry compartments or shafts, they'll be able to locate them and stand a better chance of being safe.
"If, however, they live or work in a glass building, or in a building with flimsy drywall partitions or stairshafts, we hope they'll consider fire safety (Continued on page 27)
