Minn. Masonry Institute Conducts Sales Seminar
"How To Sell Masonry Not Just Build It" was the central theme of the recent sales and marketing seminar on commercial and industrial building construction co-conducted by the Minnesota Masonry Institute in Bloomington, Minn. Some 95 mason contractors and suppliers, a number of them from out of state, attended the full-day meeting.
Speakers included Jim Bagen, area manager, Dale Carnegie Courses, Minneapolis; Tom Richardson, executive director, Minnesota Masonry Institute: John D. Peterson, director, conservation and planning. Minnesota Energy Agency; Roger Heid, P.E.. Anchor Block Co.; Del Olson, sales engineer, Curran V. Nielsen Co., Inc.; Bill Forder, P.E., president, Faircon. Inc., and Ray Prossen, R. J. Prossen Co.
Co-sponsoring the seminar were the Minnesota Concrete Products Association and the Minnesota Concrete & Masonry Contractors Association.
Noise Compliance Pact
The U.S. Labor Department and the National Concrete Masonry Association have jointly signed a job noise compliance agreement covering some 600 block manufacturers.
Purpose of the agreement, according to Assistant Secretary of Labor John H. Stender, who heads the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), and NCMA president Paul Lenchuk, is to encourage employers to overcome technological and economic problems in reducing job noise exposure by utilizing constructive research to safeguard employee hearing.
Block Prices Reduced
National Cement Products Co., Toledo, Ohio, has announced a 7% reduction in concrete block prices, according to James R. Martin, executive vice president.
Martin said the price reduction results from the installation of a completely automated block production system called "PetroCure." Much of the hardware for the $500,000 system was engineered by NCP personnel.

St. Louis MCA Reelects Don Leonard President
Donald O. Leonard, Jr., president of Don Leonard Brick Contracting Co., was recently installed for his third term as president of the Mason Contractors Association of St. Louis during an installation dinner attended by more than 200 persons.
Other officers installed were: John Abeln III. vice president; Fred C. Daues, secretary, and Donald C. Grant, treasurer.

Loadbearing Hi-rise Hotel Planned for Fort Worth
Another in the fast-growing chain of loadbearing hi-rise concrete masonry hotels will soon become part of the Fort Worth, Texas skyline. The system is being used for the new 12-story, 130,000-square-foot Passport Inn in downtown Fort Worth near the Tarrant County Convention Center.
The structure will be 95% loadbearing concrete masonry units and precast concrete floor planks with the remainder being poured-in-place reinforced concrete.
The exterior face of the Passport Inn. will be composed of white split-face fluted hardrock block. All of the block work will be ground-edge, full-size units laid with Threadline mortar. The interior or loadbearing block walls will primarily be regular concrete block with ground edge and also laid with Threadline mortar.
"We selected this building system because it offers significant economic savings and interesting design opportunities not found in other systems," said architect Harry Hoover.
Salveson Addresses Building Officials
Gene Salveson, executive director of the Masonry Institute of Washington, Seattle, presented a four and a half hour workshop and lecture during Washington State University's annual Short Course for Building Officials.
Some 95 officials attended the meetings from Washington, Oregon and Montana. Salveson covered masonry construction and the Code, and presented MIW's fireplace standards.
He also was invited to address fifth-year students in the architectural structures class at the University of Idaho.
New IH Lease Plan
International Harvester, Chicago, III., has announced a new lease plan for industrial equipment to assist its distributors in increasing their participation in the rental market. Eligible equipment includes all new industrial tractors, Payloggers, hydraulic excavators and related equipment.
