Michigan Institute Holds Seminars

Third seminar in the series, for architects and engineers, attracted 165 for cocktails, lunch and program in Detroit's St. Regis Hotel.

In these days of energy crisis, material shortages and rampant inflation, there's more interest than ever in the basic building material that can help solve those problems -masonry.

To help prove this point, the three seminars held recently by the Masonry Institute of Michigan to explore the advantages of masonry design for one-story commercial and industrial buildings drew more than 250 industry representatives. Some 165 architects and engineers were present for the concluding session in the series. The two earlier meetings, one for mason contractors and union officials, the other for building owners and developers, also drew encouraging attendance.

Second seminar was for building owners and developers. This pre-meeting shot of attendees includes Ron Hurta (2nd from left), industry coordinator of the Masonry Institute.

First seminar in the Masonry Institute of Michigan series was for mason contractors and union officials. Included in this group is Francis Costella (far left), president of the Detroit Mason Contractors Association.

A grizzled old banker in a rural town was being interviewed on his successful career. "How did you get started in the banking business?" he was asked. "It was simple," he replied. "I put up a sign saying 'Bank. A fellow came in and gave me $100. Another came by with $200. By that time my confidence had reached such a point that I put in $50 of my own money."
