Peter B. Hoyt, executive vice president of Betco Block & Products, has been elected president of the Masonry Institute of Washington, D.C. for 1975. Dee Brown, Dee Brown Masonry, Inc. (MCAA), has been presented the SIR (Skill, Integrity, Responsibility) Award by the Dallas construction industry. Blair R. Crum has been appointed national sales manager for Norton Company's Safety Products Division, Worcester, Mass.
A fascinating story on the late John B. Kelly, who started as a bricklayer and built one of the most successful mason contracting firms in the nation, appeared in the November 25, 1974 edition of the Milwaukee Journal. It tells about his unusual last will and testament, a document he himself composed without benefit of attorneys and reflecting his buoyant spirit and Irish sense of humor. His firm, John B. Kelly, Inc., of Philadelphia, has been a long-standing member of MCAA. Amspec, Inc., Columbus, Ohio, has appointed its first female field sales representative. Mariann Obert has been named to a newly created post specializing in the sale of construction materials to architects in the commercial market. Ned M. Swaeby has been elevated to sales manager of Stone Construction Equipment, Inc., Honeoye, N.Y.
Barkshire Brothers of Tacoma and Seattle (Wash.) showed a slide presentation of panelized highrise masonry construction at the December 11 meeting of the Oregon Masonry Guild in Portland. Assisting Bob and Barney Barkshire was Gene Salveson, executive director of the Masonry Institute of Washington. "Concrete Masonry and Energy Conservation" was the principal topic at the 17th annual convention of the Indiana Concrete Masonry Association in Indianapolis, January 19-21. Henry Toennies, vice president for technical services, National Concrete Masonry Association, was principal speaker. Edward A. Fuller has been advanced to general sales manager of New England Carbide, Middletown, Conn. The division, known as Newcarb, makes carbide-tipped masonry bits. Fuller succeeds Frederick W. Driscoll who retired after 29 years of service with the company. The American National Standards Institute, New York, N.Y., has awarded honorary life membership to Dr. Francis L. LaQue, deputy assistant secretary of commerce for product standards, and bestowed a special citation for "eminent service to the institute" on Roy P. Trowbridge, institute president.
The Facing Tile Institute has relocated from Chicago to the nation's capital and is now at 500 12th St., S.W., Suite 810, Washington, D.C. 20004. Wayne J. Smith is executive director. Charles W. Reene has moved from the Skokie (III.) headquarters of the Portland Cement Association to D.C. as executive vice president of Washington affairs. William H. McDonald has been appointed architectural services director of the Indiana Limestone Institute, Bedford, Ind. Bruce Burkland has been named national marketing promotion director of BIA.
Two regional management assignments for Darex concrete admixtures have been announced by the W.R. Grace & Co. Construction Products Division, Cambridge, Mass. David L. Wightman has been transferred to the firm's Chicago office as midwest regional manager, and Herman G. Protze III succeeds Wightman as northeast regional manager in Cambridge. Carl Horstrup is the new executive secretary-treasurer of the Southern Oregon Masonry Industry Fund headquartered in Eugene. The Marble Institute of America, which recently moved from McLean, Va. to 1015 20th St., N.W., Suite 411, Washington, D.C. 20006, has appointed Hugh D. Keogh as executive director. Richard Slabaugh, Concrete Stone Co., Omaha, Neb., and George Sinnicks, Superior Block Co., Charlotte, N.C., have been elected chairman of the board and chairman-elect of the board, respectively, of the National Concrete Masonry Association.
