Hold Summer Executive Board Meeting

Pinehurst, N.C. The MCAA Executive Board met here on June 25-29 to review the Association's programs and activities and to hear reports from Officers and Committee Chairmen. The tall, stately Southern pines and the gently rolling hills made the impressive Pinehurst Hotel and Country Club an ideal location to make the meetings both productive from a business point of view and socially enjoyable.

Meetings started at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning when Robert Harrison, MCAA Treasurer, called the Finance Committee to order. Its task was to prepare the budget for the coming year. Following at 10:30 a.m. Vice President Robert Ebeling convened the Research Committee which started the task of screening the results of a recent survey on proposed projects for this committee. Promptly at 1:30 p.m. members and their wives boarded buses for a tour of the "Brick Capitol of the World," Sanford, North Carolina. Lee Brick Company with its modern equipment and closed circuit TV monitoring was the first stop. Describing the various operations were Joe Patrick, President. BIA: Richard Otterson, Executive Director, BIA, and Corb Garton, Executive Director, BIA of North Carolina. Sanford Brick Company was the second stop where members saw one of the largest producing plants in the world. Mining, milling, production, burning and cubing operations were all observed. This is one of a series of programs designed to keep MCAA Officers and Members abreast of the latest developments in the Masonry Industry. Thursday evening a Western style cook out was held poolside at the hotel and everyone enjoyed the excellent food and delightful weather.

Friday morning was devoted to a Management Institute presentation which this year featured sessions on Apprenticeship Training. Bricklayer & Trowel Trades Pension Trust, Safety, Material Handling and Insurance. Mel Baum, Chairman of the Safety Committee started the meeting off with a report of the June 20th meeting of his Committee in Chicago. Bracing of masonry walls and related subjects were covered. Following this Jerry Dufour indicated that the Material Handling Committee had also met on the 20th and that his Committee was endeavoring to tabulate the returns on the recent survey of cubing of concrete masonry units. Work was also underway in the area of the Material Handling Jamboree held each year in conjunction with the annual convention.

Joe Szabo, Chairman, Bricklayers & Trowel Trades Pension Trust, gave a report on the growth of this international fund. At this point President Velardo called upon Vice President Robert Ebeling to present a slide presentation on the recently established International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust. After this comprehensive visual report both Mr. Velardo and Mr. Ebeling answered questions relative to the program.

At 1:30 on Friday afternoon members teed off for the Annual Executive Board Golf Tournament on the Championship Course at Pinehurst. Winning golfer was Mickey Soloff with Mack Pettit an extremely close second. Top ladies golfer was Pat Pettit with Billie Soloff carding the best low gross. An added attraction this year was the prowess of many of the members on the tennis courts.

From most reports received the stellar player was Allen Knuth with Bill Dentinger and Harry Prossen setting a fast pace for the others.

On Saturday morning, President Velardo called the Board into executive session at 9:30 A.M. Reports were heard from each of the Officers and Regional Vice President. Immediate Past President, Mickey Soloff, presented the IMI 1975 Mid-Year Report and reviewed with the Board Members some of the activities. He discussed the Masonry Industry Liaison Committee's work relative to FHA Minimum Property Requirements and, specifically, Regulation 51b. The Committee had testified before Senator Proxmire's committee, hearing arguments relative to performance standards and prescriptive standards. He announced that the firm of Hankins and Anderson, Richmond, Virginia, had been retained to develop specific data and information concerning the "M" Factor.

Mr. Joseph Szabo, Chairman of the Bricklayer and Trowel Trades International Pension Trust gave the Members a synopsis of the progress being made by this Trust.

The 1975-1976 budget was then presented by the Finance Committee Chairman, Robert Harrison. Each of the items was discussed, and a comparison of the previous year's expenditures was made. After a thorough analysis of the budget, it was unanimously accepted by the Executive Board.

Mr. Ebeling, Chairman of the Apprenticeship Committee, reported briefly on the International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust. A complete presentation of this was made at the Friday morning Management Institute.

President Velardo then indicated that in accordance with MCAA Constitution and By-Laws, Article XX, Section 1, the following were presented as members of the Nominating Committee: Louis Helbert, Jr., Eugene George, David Soloff, Jr., Blaine Warner, Anthony Zotollo, Robert Tubesing (Alternate), and Allen Young (Alternate). They were unanimously accepted.

All of the Committee Chairmen presented reports, copies of which were placed on file and have been sent to each Member of the Executive Board. There was also a review of the work of the CCE and the various jurisdictional matters relative to the Masonry Industry.

There being no further business before the Executive Board, the meeting adjourned at 12:10 P.M.
