General Portland Inc, was awarded a contract by Southwest Research Institute of San Antonio to conduct the major portion of the research work. Southwest Research Institute, a major non-profit corporation devoted to industrial research, was awarded the primary contract by the Federal Energy Administration, Washington, D. C. Work on the project will take approximately one year. The study is designed to determine how industrial wastes such as fly ash, slag, and kiln dust can be used as components in the manufacturing process to produce a quality portland cement with less energy.
Brick Featured In Bamberger's Store
Construction of a $6.2 million, two-level Bamberger's store is now underway at Quaker Bridge Mall, a 120-store regional shopping center now rising on a 104-acre site in Lawrence Township, N.J. Designed by the national architectural and engineering firm of Welton Becket Associates, the gleaming white brick-and-glass store will be the dramatic western anchor for the enclosed two-level mall. Henry H. Brennan, A.I.A, director of the Becket firm's New York office, said the brick and crystal-like entrances on the south and west facades will combine to form a crisp showcase for Bamberger's.
New Look for The Lady's Flame
The flame atop the Statue of Liberty's torch has been reglazed and sealed with silicone sealant in preparation for the nation's bicentennial celebration next year. For the glazing contractor, J. Sontag Glass & Shade Co., Inc., New York City, refurbishing The Lady's flame was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an artistic challenge.
The contract called for replacing a number of broken or missing panes of cathedral glass of various amber hues. But the original glass panes installed in 1916 were so dirty and weathered that Joseph Sontag volunteered to replace all the glass as a matter of pride in craftsmanship. The National Park Service, which maintains the statue, accepted Sontag's offer.
Funds for the torch repair and other interior refurbishing, including painting the inside of the monument, were donated by the American Express Foundation as a gift. The glazing work, which began early last May, was completed in 30 days.
When the statue was erected in 1886 a gift of the people of France to the United States-Liberty's torch was formed of copper sheeting and contained no glass. In 1916 the flame was redesigned using a total of 600 pieces of tinted cathedral glass to enhance the lighting effects. The torch redesign was done by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore fame.
For sealing the glass to the metal, Sontag used Dow Corning 781 silicone sealant. Working 300 feet above New York harbor, two craftsmen can be seen atop their ladders to the right of the flame.
General Portland To Participate In Energy Savings Research
A federal research project which could help the nation's cement industry reduce the energy required to produce cement through use of selective industrial wastes was initiated this week in Dallas.
