New PCA Publication on Concrete Brick Veneers

Concrete Brick Veneers, a new, four-color publication prepared by the Portland Cement Association, details the advantages of concrete brick as a cladding for residential structures. Included is information for the builder regarding common sizes and colors, compressive strength, water absorption limits and mortar proportions; quality control during manufacture, and many valuable construction tips. Also provided are guide specifications that can be easily incorporated into specifications written independently for a particular project.


Quake Study Undertaken by Engineers, Government

Significant reduction in deaths and damage from future earthquakes by improved building design is the goal of a cooperative project between federal agencies and the engineering profession.

The National Bureau of Standards of the U.S. Department of Commerce, with funding in the amount of $895,000 from the National Science Foundation, has contracted for the project with the Applied Technology Council of the 2,000-member Structural Engineers Association of California.

The plan calls for development of comprehensive seismic design provisions for buildings. Completion of the project is scheduled for April, 1976. Specialists will update, expand and substantially revise current seismic design provisions in the light of recent research results and the observed performance of buildings in recent earthquakes.

The United States averages eight earthquake-caused deaths per year. Estimated property damage from major U.S. earthquakes in the past half-century amounts to $1.25 billion.
