In Memoriam
Anton (Tony) Pockar, a principal in Pockar Bros. Masonry Ltd., Regina, Sask., Canada, and five other related firms, died accidentally January 31, 1975, while on vacation in Hawaii. Mr. Pockar, 44, immigrated to Canada from Yugoslavia at the age of 17 and subsequently was joined there by his three brothers. They all were instrumental in the operation of their corporation which was formed in 1957 and presently employs 200 personnel. Mr. Pockar was a regional vice president of the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association; director of Calgary Masonry Supplies Ltd., and past-president of Masonry Contractors of Alberta.
William Deden, one of the Chicago area pioneers in the masonry industry, died January 3 in Paramount, Calif. A native of Chicago, Mr. Deden had been a mason contractor there for many years. He was active in the formation of the Mason Contractors Association of Cook County as well as the MCAA. He also was active on the committees of the local chapter. He retired to California and led a quiet life with his gardening, fishing, a little golf and card playing. He will long be remembered for his genial personality, long cigars, and wonderful stories.
Leo F. Havey, 70, veteran business manager of St. Louis (Mo.) Bricklayers Local 1, died March 3 at St. John's Mercy Medical Center after a long illness. Mr. Havey, a 50-year member of Local 1, had served as an officer of the union since 1932 when he was elected vice president. He became president in 1934 and business manager in 1939, an office he maintained until his retirement in January, 1974.
The annual meeting of the Michigan Mason Contractors Association will be held September 12-14 at Shanty Creek Lodge in Bellaire, Mich.
Construction Journalist Ernest Mickel Retires
Ernest P. Mickel, for 29 years Washington editor of three Dodge construction newspapers published by McGraw-Hill Information Systems Company of New York City, has retired from a journalism career that earned him national recognition throughout the construction industry.
Mickel's years in Washington, from 1946 to 1975, spanned a period when the rapid growth of government and national construction association activities had increasingly complex effects on the industry. In recent years several leading groups honored him in recognition of the fact that he excelled in his ability to understand different viewpoints and developments within the nation's single largest industry.
KMI Appoints Burnett
Edwin E. Burnett has been appointed director of the Kentuckiana Masonry Institute, an association of leading mason contractors in the metropolitan Louisville area.
Announcement of the selection of the 44-year-old Burnett, formerly district manager for Kentucky Utilities in Danville, was made by KMI chairman Paul Clements, head of Paul Clements Masonry, Inc., Louisville.
Safway Launches Safety Campaign for Scaffolds
A nationwide program to help construction and allied trade contractors prevent accidents involving scaffolding has been announced by Safway Steel Products, Milwaukee, Wis. The campaign, titled "Safety On Scaffolds" (SOS), is comprised of two parts:
1. Proper erection and maintenance. Safway has prepared a folder with 53 scaffold regulations plus check lists for stationary scaffolds and rolling towers. Purpose of the check lists is to ensure that safety regulations are followed, and to provide a permanent inspection record for each job.
2. Instruction of personnel in the safe use of scaffold equipment. Safway will furnish billfold-size "Safety Tips" to be used for instruction and carried by all persons who work on or around scaffolds.
Copies of the Safety Regulations and Inspection Check List, as well as personnel Safety Tip cards, will be enclosed with all delivery tickets whenever Safway scaffolding is delivered to a jobsite.
Kits of the SOS material are also available to the entire construction industry through local Safway branches, distributors and dealers, or by writing to: SOS Program, Safway Steel Products, 6228 W. State St., Milwaukee, Wis. 53201.
Washington MI Launches TV, Radio Campaigns
Washington (D.C.) area mason contractors and the local bricklayers union have launched the largest radio and television promotional push in the history of that area's masonry advertising.
Geared to both residential and commercial real estate markets, their TV advertising will appear throughout all of 1975 on news and public issues shows including: Agronsky & Co.; Face the Nation; Issues & Answers; Meet the Press; The Reasoner Report, and CBS Morning News. Radio programming includes drive-time news and sports sponsorships such as Len Hathaway, Joseph McCaffrey, Jim Simpson and Warner Wolf.
Sponsors include the Mason Contractors Association of the District of Columbia, Bricklayers Local #6, and the Masonry Institute, Inc.
GSA Energy Saving Guide
More than 300 recommendations for saving energy in office buildings are listed in a new publication released by the U.S. General Services Administration, Energy Conservation Guidelines for Existing Office Buildings.
According to GSA administrator Arthur F. Sampson, application of the recommendations could result in a 20% to 30% energy savings in the operation of office buildings. Copies of the guide may be purchased for $2 at GSA Business Service Centers located throughout the country.
