CCE Meets With Wm. T. Coleman
CCE President Harry P. Taylor along with other industry officials met on August 30th with Secretary of Transportation William T. Coleman, Jr. and members of his staff to explain the industry's position regarding no-strike agreements on Urban Mass Transit Administration construction projects.
The Secretary explained his desire for Mass Transit work to proceed without work stoppages and called upon the assembled management group to assist him in this respect. In reply to inquiries from some association representatives, the Secretary said that it was not the intent of the Department of Transportation to prevent qualified contractors from bidding or working on Mass Transit work, whether or not they have collective bargaining agreements.
Other meetings will be held in the very near future to seek resolution of the problem as it affects collective bargaining.
As principal manager, builder, owner and lessor of Federal buildings in the United States, the General Services Administration is responsible for 10,000 Federally-owned or leased buildings. It has 900 construction projects underway, a billion dollar annual budget, 19,200 employees and an inventory of 250 million square feet of building space across the country.
