The J. C. Penney Company store in Portland, Oregon's newest and largest shopping center, Washington Square, is an excellent example of the blending of masonry materials, quality craftsmanship and exceptional design and planning.
With its flowing exterior walls, the architect has skillfully utilized circular towers to provide a refreshing relief for the massive masonry walls. Five of the towers also serve the structure as stair enclosures.
Brick units are 3" x 32" x 11-1/2" and are blends of mission faced textured red and brown tones from a local producer. The exterior is backed up with 8" concrete masonry units, reinforced and grouted to comply with UBC sesmic code Zone #2. So as to carry into the store the warm tones of the brick, several floor areas are paved with brick of matching colors. Over 250,000 face brick were used with strict quality control being used to insure the circular dimensions and uniformity required by the architect.
Washington Square features six major department stores and 108 other retail outlets having 1,100,000 square feet of floor space. All buildings in the complex are faced with masonry materials including brick and concrete masonry units of varying sizes and colors. John Graham, Seattle, Washington, was the Master Architect for the shopping mall.
The J. C. Penney Company store recently received special recognition by the Architectural profession in the annual awards program of the Portland Chamber of Commerce.
