"The Bricklayer: Brick & Block Construction." By Merlin Taylor and Harland Randolph. Volume I of a three-volume set; 272 pp.; 287 illustrations; outlined table of contents. Full set: $38.00. International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust (IMAT), 815 15th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20005.
The Bricklayer: Brick & Block Construction is the first volume in a new three-volume series of instructional materials designed to standardize and improve training and craft skills among the trowel trades. The first volume features 272 pages of information on practical masonry construction and is profusely illustrated with 287 detailed drawings, charts and tables.
The text is comprehensive in scope covering 30 areas of masonry construction ranging from basic masonry tools and materials to blueprint reading and estimating. Two chapters focus on math review and metric conversion.
The text was planned and developed by top journeymen and mason contractors with years of "hands-on" experience as well as by prominent suppliers to the construction industry. The guide contains practical, "how-to" information on the wide range of assignments performed by the modern bricklayer. It can be used as a teaching tool, a guide to standardized trade practices, and as a handy reference in the office or in the field.
The co-authors share many years of combined experience in the masonry and insrtuctional fields. Merlin Taylor, a top journeyman bricklayer for 25 years, is responsible for the apprenticeship and other training programs of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen (BAC) and is assistant to the president of that organization. Harland Randolph, Ph.D., is an honorary member of BAC and a specialist in the development of instructional systems and curriculum materials.
The International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit organization funded through negotiated contributions by BAC and the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA). Formed in 1975, IMAT has been created to help meet the manpower training needs of the masonry industry.
Volume I of The Bricklayer is available only as part of the complete three-volume set at a total price of $38.00 including postage and handling. The second and third volumes will be forwarded without additional charge upon their publication next year. All orders must be prepaid and addressed to IMAT.
"Simplified Thermal Design of Building Envelopes for Use With ASHRAE Standard 90-75." By Stanley E. Goodwin and Mario J. Catani. 52 pp.; illustrated; bibliography. $1.80 per copy with discounts for bulk orders. Portland Cement Association, Old Orchard Rd., Skokie, III. 60076.
This publication is intended to assist architects, designers and building officials in the application of the requirements of ASHRAE Standard 90-75, particularly those requirements stated in Section 4.0, Exterior Envelope Requirements. To demonstrate the performance concept of the Standard, this publication offers interpolations, presents step-by-step design procedures, and solves example problems using newly developed design aids.
By employing Section 4.2.1.1, Other Considerations of the Standard, this new energy conservation publication goes beyond the general criteria limitations and presents a simplified method for including the benefits of thermal storage, which are so significant in concrete buildings. Although state, local government and model codes have been adopting the Standard with modifications, most of the tables and methods presented in this new bulletin still apply throughout the United States.
The co-authors, Stanley E. Goodwin and Mario J. Catani, are, respectively, structural engineer and director of Portland Cement Association's Building Construction Department.
