"M" Factor Document
Released by MIC
The Masonry Industry Committee (MIC) has released an official printed report which reveals results of the extensive research conducted by the Richmond (Va.) engineering firm of Hankins & Anderson of the positive role played by the mass of masonry walls in energy conservation.

The 12-page booklet, based on the study for MIC by Hankins & Anderson, is titled Mass, Masonry, Energy. It shows that the heavier mass of masonry walls conserves energy better than steady-state U values predict.

MIC members are giving wide distribution to the report and have copies available at 35 cents each or $25 per 100 copies for use by local promotion groups. Copies may be obtained from MCAA.

IMAT Publishes Apprenticeship Text
Looking over one of the first copies of "The Bricklayer: Brick & Block Construction" published by the International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust (IMAT) are, from the left: IMAT Trustees Charles F. Velardo, Newton Highlands, Mass.: Thomas F. Murphy, Washington, D.C.; IMAT Chairman Robert Ebeling, Romeo, Mich.; Merlin Taylor, Washington, D.C., and IMAT Advisor George A. Miller, Oak Brook, III.

Washington, D.C. Nov. 28-The International Masonry Apprenticeship Trust (IMAT) has announced the publication of The Bricklayer: Brick & Block Construction, the first volume in a new three-volume set of instructional materials designed to standardize and improve training and craft skills among the trowel trades.

The first volume features 272 pages of information on practical masonry construction and is profusely illustrated with 287 detailed drawings, charts and tables. The text is comprehensive in scope covering 30 areas of masonry construction ranging from basic tools and materials to blueprint reading and estimating. Two chapters focus on math review and metric conversion.

IMAT, the publisher of this new work, is a non-profit organization funded through negotiated contributions by the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen (BAC) and the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA). Formed in October, 1974, IMAT has been created to help meet the manpower training needs of the masonry industry.

According to mason contractor Robert F. Ebeling, Chairman of IMAT and President of MCAA, The Bricklayer is substantially different from previous training materials for masons. "The text was planned, written and published by top journeymen and mason contractors with years of 'hands-on' experience as well as by prominent suppliers to the construction industry," Ebeling said. "The guide contains practical, how-to information on the wide range of assignments performed by the modern bricklayer. It can be used as a teaching tool, a guide to standardized trade practices, and as a handy reference in the field or office."

The co-authors share many years of combined experience in the masonry and instructional fields. Merlin Taylor, a journeyman bricklayer for 25 years, is responsible for the apprenticeship and other training programs of the International Union of Bricklayers and Craftsmen and is assistant to the president of that orga(Continued on page 29)
