Q.-Is one man strong enough to pick up a pallet, or does that require two men?

Dufour: One man can do it.

Q. On another subject, would Signode be willing to assist in running a pilot strapping job for a mason contractor, say, in the Milwaukee area?

Zivkovic: Definitely.

Q.-Let's turn to the two manufacturers from Milwaukee. What would you like the mason contractors to do in the way of cooperating with you?

Klos: As far as we are concerned, the more we do for contractors, the more they expect. Perhaps a competitor will lift the block up on a scaffold for them; we will not do that for nothing.

Bronson: The most important thing to us would be the proper order and plenty of lead time. If we are making architectural block, we would like to run it in a continuous run because we have variables with the curing, the aggregates, the color. We would like to run a job and finish it as one continuous run. And then we would like to have as much time as possible with the order. Too, we would like to know the proper quantities needed as close to the correct amount as possible.

I also think it's important that we all get to the architect so there are proper construction details for each job. The mason contractor gets blamed for the leaky walls, the cracked walls, the bad mortar. So let's tell the architect ahead of time if you are going to design that way, you're going to have a lousy wall!

Maybe the architect is specifying incompatible materials. Maybe he doesn't have weep holes. Perhaps a particular type of block is a poor one for that job. Let's tell him ahead of time, not when it's too late. Let's try to get everything right in the beginning.

Co-Moderator George Miller: We will close on that note. I feel these discussions are good, not only for the mason contractor but for the brick and block producer and the equipment manufacturer who service our industry. The sole purpose is to interchange ideas and see if we can further develop and define those things that we are doing. The whole objective is to get a lower in-the-wall cost. That is what we are here for, so we can remain competitive and expand our markets.

Co-Moderator Bill Blaha: I think this has been a very successful meeting. I am happy there has been so much participation here this afternoon.

Energy-Saving Concrete Blocks

A St. Louis building materials manufacturer has built a concrete block house to show that block can be insulated to provide more energy savings than a conventional frame home. The building was constructed in St. Peters. Mo. for F. F. Kirchner, Inc. Dale Kirchner, president of Kirchner Industries, the firm's production company, said the construction involved pre-insulated lightweight concrete block coated with a fiber glass adhesive.

"The walls are more efficient than a stud wall in acting as a reservoir for heating and cooling, so the furnace or air conditioner won't cycle on and off as often," Kirchner said. Kirchner built the house to market a line of concrete block his firm began to sell about a year ago. Using a new type of concrete aggregate, the company developed a block seven pounds lighter than conventional block. U-shaped pieces of polystyrene are inserted in the core to increase insulation.
