National Gypsum Co., Dallas, Texas, has elected Robert E. Scifres to the newly created post of vice chairman of the board and C. Rex Morgan to the position of group vice president for its Cement, DMH Manufactured Housing, and Binning's Building Products divisions. David J. McDonald has been appointed an abrasives specialist for the Abrasive Material Division of Norton Co., Worcester, Mass. Woodrow R. Eshenaur has resigned as president and chief executive officer of Glen-Gery Corp., Reading, Pa., but will continue to serve as chairman and devote most of his time to energy-related projects for the brick-making firm.
Michigan Opens Masonry Design Awards Program
The entry box is now open in the third annual Honor Awards Program for Excellence in Masonry Design sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Michigan in cooperation with the Michigan Society of Architects.
Architects must signify their intention to enter the program by August 15 and submit their completed entries by October 25. The winners will be announced at an Honor Awards Banquet in January, 1978.

ANSI Opposes Federal Voluntary Standards Act
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has gone on record as opposing the Voluntary Standards and Accreditation Act of 1977, S. 825. In a position statement submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Antitrust and Monopoly, ANSI said that enactment of the bill would deprive the American public of one of its most valuable assets-voluntary action to solve problems and meet new and challenging needs.
Instead of seeking to nationalize the voluntary standards system, the government should fairly enforce existing laws "which are totally adequate to provide an oversight of voluntary activity," the statement said.

Metropolitan Industries Forms New Subsidiary
Metropolitan Industries, Inc., Canton, Ohio, has announced the formation of a new subsidiary, Metropolitan Ceramics, Inc., organized to manufacture and sell a high quality line of architectural ceramic pavers.
A new 60,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant incorporating unique production methods is being built on a 30-acre site in Canton Industrial Park. Total investment in this new project is estimated at $5 million.
In making the announcement, J. Steven Renkert, president of both Metropolitan Industries and the new subsidiary, said:
"The last 10 years have marked a gradual product transition for Metropolitan, from the conventional brick and paver business into the more specialized architectural ceramic paver business. The new plant has been designed to manufacture architectural clay products and pavers similar to those previously produced by Metropolitan but on a far more modern basis."
BIA Offers Brochure
The Brick Institute of America is circulating an impressive, seven-page folder illustrating specific examples of the "adaptive use" of brick.
Adaptive use, or recycling, refers to building remodeling ranging from a minor facelift to the extensive exterior resurfacing of an existing structure. The term also can mean any modification of a facility to make it suitable for new and different needs.

Engineering Firm Gets Retail Center Contract
The structural engineering contract for the entire 11.3 acre Pasadena (Calif.) Retail Center has been awarded to Ruthroff & Englekirk, Inc., consulting structural engineers. The $100 million complex will include a two-story mall with two levels of subterranean parking, a two-story J.C. Penney's department store, and a three-story Broadway department store.
Ruthroff & Englekirk has been retained by architectural firms Charles Kober Associates for the mall, the parking structure and the Broadway store, and by Burke Nicolais Archuleta for J.C. Penney's.
