New "Hot Box" Measures Heat Transfer
A new $100,000 test facility at the Portland Cement Association's research complex in Skokie, Ill., will permit PCA researchers to determine the heat transmission characteristics of building walls constructed of different types of materials and designs. The equipment is a calibrated "hot box" that can accommodate wall panels as large as 8-½ ft. square. It was developed by PCA engineers to expand their capabilities for research in energy-efficient building design.
Essentially the equipment consists of two chambers, separated by a test wall. One chamber can be held at normal indoor temperatures while the opposite chamber operates at cycling temperatures to simulate outdoor weather. The "hot box" can accommodate temperatures from -20°F to 120°F. It will permit direct measurement of the dynamic effects of various types of wall construction on heating and cooling requirements for day-and-night outside temperature changes as well as winter-and-summer seasonal variations.
Dr. W. Gene Corley, PCA's director of engineering development, said the equipment will be used both in PCA's own research programs and in contract research projects for private industry and government agencies.

Minnesota Concrete & Masonry Day
Governor Rudy Perpich proclaimed June 26, 1977, Minnesota's State Concrete and Masonry Day in honor of the more than 8,000 Minnesotans actively engaged in the state's concrete and masonry industry. This year marked the fifth annual project to promote public awareness of the versatility, economy and aesthetics of concrete and masonry products in meeting community needs.

$75,000 was awarded as the grand prize of the Duff's Golf and Tennis Tournament held June 25-26 at Rolling Green Country Club. All of the concrete and masonry products necessary for construction of the home were donated by those within the industry. The Minnesota Masonry Institute (MMI) assisted with procuring commitments from the various manufacturers and distributors making donations.
