MCAA Summer
Executive
Board Meeting
Boyne Mountain Lodge, nestled into the picturesque, rolling hills of northern Michigan, was the site for the 1977 MCAA Summer Executive Board meeting on June 16-19 at Boyne Falls. The scenic surroundings and excellent weather were further enhanced by the exceptionally good attendance at the meeting. The business portion of the schedule was structured to allow ample time for outdoor activities, including the MCAA golf and tennis tournaments.
The afternoon of the opening day, Thursday, June 16, was devoted to meetings of the MCAA Constitution & Bylaws and Insurance Committees.
The Constitution & Bylaws Committee, chaired by David B. "Mickey" Soloff, Jr., considered requests from various MCAA members to realign the Association's nine geographical regions so as to effect a more balanced and equitable representation among the regional vice presidents. The committee then submitted its recommendation to the Executive Board, which met on Saturday.
The Insurance Committee, under the chairmanship of Don Leonard, reviewed the Association's sponsorship of the Commercial Casualty/Property Insurance program. It voted to recommend to the Board for its consideration that MCAA not contemplate a sponsored program of this insurance beyond November 1. 1977. Participating in the discussion were MCAA insurance consultants Walter Derk and Richard Lietz.
On Friday morning, the MCAA Material Handling, Safety, and Joint Apprenticeship Committees met. Convening jointly, the Material Handling/Safety Committees, respectively chaired by Gerald Dufour and William Deninger, reviewed the progress of the MCAA Rough Terrain Fork Lift Safety Training Manual, which had been introduced earlier this year, and explored the development of a visual slide presentation to supplement the Manual. The committees afterward reported to the Board that this pilot project was progressing favorably.
The committees also adopted for the Board's consideration a series of hand signals to be used in conjunction with the operation of fork lifts on masonry projects to achieve greater safety and efficiency.
At the meeting of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee, chairman Robert Ebeling made an audio-visual presentation on tuckpointing. This module is being developed to supplement its recently introduced textbook, The Bricklayer: Brick & Block Construction, in various training programs.
Following these committee meetings, Leo Nazdin, director of jurisdictional disputes, Laborers International Union of North America, addressed a general audience on the continuing disputes involving masonry projects.
He was followed by Charles F. Velardo, chairman of the International Masonry Institute, who introduced the showing of IMI's newest promotional film, "Architects/Architecture." The full color/sound movie runs 40 minutes in length and features internationally known architects Philip Johnson, Ulrich Franzen, George Hartman and Warren Cox. The film will be distributed to every accredited school of architecture in the United States and Canada to encourage masonry design in building construction.
At 12:30 p.m. on Friday, the MCAA Executive Board Golf Tournament was held at the Alpine championship golf course. That evening a general reception was hosted by the Michigan Mason Contractors Association in the pool area of the lodge.
The MCAA Executive Board Meeting convened on Saturday morning, June 18, with President Robert Ebeling presiding. Ebeling presented the MCAA "Outstanding Committee Chairman Award for 1976-77" to Gerald Dufour for the work that his Material Handling Committee had done in spearheading the Rough Terrain Fork Lift Safety Training Manual.
The Board then heard full reports from officers and committee chairmen, as well as special reports. In actions taken, the Board:
Accepted the Insurance Committee's recommendation that MCAA not contemplate a sponsored program of Commercial Casualty/Property Insurance beyond November 1. 1977, and that the membership be notified to this effect.
Approved the Constitution & Bylaws Committee's recommendation to realign the Association's geographical divisions.
