Kaufman Associates Moves
Henry J. Kaufman & Associates, advertising agency for the International Masonry Institute, has moved to expanded quarters. The new address is Georgetown Building, 2233 Wisconsin Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20007. The phone number is unchanged-(202) 333-0700.
Architectural Firm Names New Management Executive
William Kessler & Associates, Detroit-based architectural firm, has appointed Louis L. Marines vice president and general manager. Marines formerly was a principal of Coxe Associates, Philadelphia management and marketing, consulting firm for architects and engineers.
Marines also was a management instructor in the Drexel University Department of Architecture, Philadelphia, and conducted professional programs for the American Institute of Architects, the National Organization of Minority Architects, American Society of Interior Designers, and the Interior Design Organization of Canada.
The Kessler organization which Marines joins has won numerous awards for architectural excellence, including design of the Harvard School of Public Health and the Lecture Hall Center at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, L.I.
Erwin Samp Dies
Erwin O. Samp, a founder of the Mason Contractors Association of Milwaukee, died on May 14 at the Pavilion Nursing Home where he was confined after suffering a stroke earlier this year. Mr. Samp, who was 77, had been active in association work right up to his last illness.
He is survived by his wife, Emily, two daughters, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. MCAA extends its sympathy to Mr. Samp's family and friends.
Jay Solomon Confirmed as Administrator of GSA
Jay Solomon of Chattanooga, Tenn., has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as administrator of the General Services Administration.
Solomon was formerly board chairman and chief executive officer of Arlen Shopping Centers Co., senior vice president and board member of the parent firm, Arlen Realty & Development Corp., and vice president and board member of Arlen Realty, Inc. The corporation, recognized as the largest shopping center development firm in the nation, owns and manages 184 centers along with residential complexes, office buildings and planned communities.
The GSA, the business arm of the federal government, is a conglomerate of five divisions with more than 37,000 employees. Solomon said he "will try to streamline the operations of this agency so that the taxpayers get the best possible return from our efforts."
Ontario Masonry Design Competition Announced
The Ontario Masons' Relations Council has announced its 13th annual Unit Masonry Architectural Design Awards competition to be held in Sutton Hall, Bristol Place Hotel, Toronto, Ont. on October 27. Purpose of the awards program is to recognize outstanding Ontario buildings constructed of Canadian made unit masonry and designed by architects. The awards are made on the basis of both design and workmanship.
Closing date for registrations is June 30, 1977, and all submissions must be received by the professional advisor, Mr. G. D. Gibson, FRAIC, Gibson & Pokorny Architects, Suite 101, 130 Merton St., Toronto, Ont. M4S 1A4 before 5 p.m. on July 21, 1977.
Cincinnati Group Meets
The Unit Masonry Association of Greater Cincinnati held an informational meeting and dinner on May 25 at the Hilton Inn in Sharonville, Ohio. Discussed was "Energy Efficiency" by speakers Alan Yorkdale, technical director, Brick Institute of America, and Jerry E. Isenburg, technical director of the Unit Masonry Association.
Apprenticeship Winners in Texas
Twenty-two participants from the three levels of apprenticeship training competed for prizes from the Texas Bricklayers and Masonry Committee and for tools and special awards from Acme Brick Co. in the recent Texas State Bricklayers Apprenticeship Contest in Longview. The two-hour contest matched contestants by experience in pier and pilaster building. Shown with the traveling trophy, which was presented to the Dallas Bricklayers' local union, are the three first-place winners (from left): Andrew Verastequi of Austin, second-year apprentice; Donald Bontrager of Dallas, third-year apprentice, and Jeff DeLord of Beaumont, first-year apprentice.
Publication Features Masonry Inst. of Oregon
The Masonry Institute of Oregon was the subject of a major story in a recent issue of the Daily Journal of Commerce in Portland. The article described the growing trend toward masonry construction in the Portland area as well as throughout the United States and Canada.
"During the past decade, it is likely more changes have come about in design and use of masonry products than for centuries preceding," the article said in part. It also cited Portland's numerous major construction projects utilizing innovative masonry design including loadbearing and panel systems.
Ray F. Wimer, MCAA Pacific Northwest field representative, is in his eleventh year as executive director of the Masonry Institute of Oregon.
