IMI PROMOTION MEETING
continued from page 20
The meeting addressed the one-cent per manhour provision per manhour worked as the financial contribution to support IMI activities. They also announced that six promotion groups have become official affiliates of IMI (see accompanying story).
One highlight of the meeting was the premier showing of two new IMI audiovisual aids: a new design film, Architects/Architecture (see box), and a new slide show, Masonry and the Building Envelope, produced for use in national and local energy conservation seminars for architects, engineers, and other design professionals.
On Monday afternoon, a Film Festival was presented, consisting of audio-visual productions by the following organizations: Glen-Gery Corporation's Discover Brick; the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association's Terrazzo Today; the National Lime Association's Lime-the Versatile Chemicol; an updated version of the National Concrete Masonry Association's "The 7% Opportunities in the Concrete Masonry Industry in the Next 25 Years; the National Tile Promotion Federation's Ceramic Tile the Human Touch, and IMI's First Principles and TV commercial.
A number of panel discussions were presented during the meeting. Participating in "Regional Programs for Schools of Architecture & Engineering" were MCAA Western States field representative Paul Rosensteel of the Arizona Masonry Guild; Gregg Borchelt of the Masonry Institute of Houston-Galveston, and James Murphy of the Unit Masonry Association of Cincinnati. The discussion centered around the growing interest on the part of IMI and local/regional promotion funds in getting masonry information into schools of architecture and engineering as a means of influencing product selection of future A/E's.
Other topics presented by guest speakers included:
WE'RE STILL NUMBER
BECAUSE
OUR MACHINES
LAST!
"Fire-Safe Construction"
by W. Robert Powers, superintendent of the New York Board of Fire Underwriters; "The Administration's New Energy Policy" by Joseph Sherman of the Department of Housing & Urban Development; "Codes/Wood Basements Government Action" by Gary Schoenfeld of the National Concrete Masonry Association; "Chicago's Architectural Heritage" by Stanley Tigerman, FAIA, and "A Consulting Engineer Looks at Masonry" by William Lefkofsky, professional engineer.
Other speakers were Oliver Witte, editor of Building Design & Construction magazine, who gave a slide presentation on solar energy and the use of masonry, and George Hartman, FAIA, who discussed his role in the production of IMI's new design film.
Additional topics covered at the meeting included: the Loadbearing Masonry System, Weatherproofing of Masonry Walls, Long-range Regional Planning, Regional Advertising Identity, Starting a Promotion Program from Scratch, and an exceptional slide show by the Arizona Masonry Guild titled Pioneer Masonry Promotion Programs.
During the meeting a new IMI cost guide, More Building Wall for the Money, and a new IMI publication, IMI 1977, were distributed. The cost guide was created for use in responding to the literally thousands of inquiries about comparative costs of building materials generated by IMI advertising. As many as 1,700 such inquiries have been processed by IMI in a single week.
Serving as discussion moderators during the meeting were IMI trustees Charles F. Velardo, Newton Highlands, Mass.; David B. "Mickey" Soloff, Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn.; Donald R. Bidwell, Plymouth, Mich.; Eugene George, Kitchener, Ont., Canada, and George A. Miller, MCAA executive vice president, Oakbrook Terrace, III.
