Harold Gruen has been elevated from chief engineer to general manager of Felker Operations of Bay State Abrasives Division, Dresser Industries, Westborough, Mass. The National Association of Brick Distributors, McLean, Va., has appointed Walter E. Galanty, Jr., as executive director. Galanty was formerly with the Business Products Division of Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co. in Springfield, Va. Eugene L. DiLaura, Jr. is rejoining the Detroit architectural firm of William Kessler & Associates. He has been named technical and construction administrator with the Kessler organization, in which he served for 15 years prior to joining Smith, Hinchman & Grylls Associates in 1971.

Richard W. Otterson, formerly executive vice president of the Brick Institute of America, has been named vice president/sales for Powell & Minnock Works, Albany, N.Y., and Darlington Brick & Clay Products Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. Both companies are subsidiaries of Marblehead Lime Co. and General Dynamics Corp. The Cement Division of National Gypsum Co., Southfield, Mich., has appointed James Fliss as sales rep in the Lansing sales district. Richard Felice, MCAA Iowa State Chairman, was a speaker on "Construction Products and Materials Manufacturing" at the recent "Progress In Metrication" workshop at Iowa State University.
HUD Official Addresses Michigan Masonry Council
Warren Lasko, acting deputy assistant secretary of the Department of Housing & Urban Development, Washington, D.C., was a featured speaker at the day-long "M (for masonry) Day" program sponsored by the Michigan Masonry Council in Dearborn, Mich., on May 3. The program was designed principally for architects and structural engineers.
Lasko, who is in charge of insured and direct loan programs, discussed HUD's plans and activities under the Carter Administration, particularly as they might affect housing and other construction in Michigan.
Chicago Masonry Council Exhibits at Product Forum
With "Miss Brick" acting as booth hostess, the Metropolitan Chicago Masonry Council participated in the first annual Construction Specifications Institute Product Forum held at the Holiday Inn in Rosemont, Ill. Approximately 105 exhibitors participated in the event.

Hugh C. MacDonald, executive director, Brick Institute of America/Region 5, along with personnel from the Brick Distributors of Illinois and the Concrete Block Manufacturers answered the many technical questions posed by architects, structural engineers and specification writers who visited the display.
The Metropolitan Chicago Masonry Council is a coalition of a number of masonry interests including mason contractors, bricklayer unions, brick and concrete block manufacturers and distributors, and allied industries and groups.
Dresser Buys Company
General Abrasive Co., Niagara Falls, N.Y., has been purchased by Dresser Industries, Inc., from U.S. Industries, Inc., company officials have announced. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
General Abrasive will operate as a division of Dresser Industries. Dresser, based in Dallas, Texas, is a diversified multinational corporation which provides high technology products and services to energy, natural resource and industrial markets.
