Trade Association Head
Comments on Energy Waste

William P. Chapman, president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), has issued the following statement commenting on President Carter's recent energy message to Congress:

"The President's heavy emphasis on reducing energy waste deserves unqualified national support. I am surprised, however, that he called for only a 45% improvement in new federal buildings and a 20% improvement in energy consumption for existing federal buildings. Hopefully the private sector will improve on the example set by government.

"ASHRAE has been saying for years that the energy consumption in all existing buildings can and should be reduced 25%. That is about 10% of the nation's total energy consumption and approximately 20% of our present oil imports.

"ASHRAE Standard 90 indicates savings of 45-60% for new non-residential buildings. Wasting energy is no different than burning money. Let's stop it."
