Opportunities In Building Construction Trades." By Michael Sumichrast and Charles P. McMahon. 102 pp.; illustrated and indexed. Hardcover edition, $4.25; paperback, $2.45. Vocational Guidance Manuals, 620 S. 5th St., Louisville, Ky. 40202.

Opportunities In Building Construction Trades is one of a series of career books published according to guidelines established by the National Vocational Guidance Association. The book presents an overview of the construction industry-its history, organization, outlook for residential and nonresidential construction, and distribution of employment.

The major part of the book is devoted to job descriptions and employment details about craftsmen in the building trades. One chapter describes such specialized tradesmen as stone masons and marble setters. Another section is devoted to contractors and builders.

For reference, five helpful appendices list recommended reading, building and trades regional offices, state apprenticeship agencies, selected colleges offering degrees in construction, and the nation's top home builders.

Sweet's Indexed Catalogue of Building Construction, 1906." 830 pp.; 8x11. $28.50. Sweet's Division, McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co., Rm. 2051, 1221 Avenue of the Americas, New York, N.Y. 10020.

As a reflection of a major industry's colorful past, Sweet's Catalog Files is reproducing the original Index of 1906. The volume contains manufacturers' catalogs for building industry products classified by manufacturer and product type, and is illustrated with black and white photos. These photos of the products, from architectural supplies to ornamental ironworks, give a unique look at the forerunners of today's buildings, materials and systems, and provide a nostalgic look at the past.

In the 70 years since the first Index was published, Sweet's has expanded its operations considerably. Now a division of McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co., Sweet's produces and distributes building product information and services reaching more than 90,000 buying and specifying offices in the general building, engineering, industrial construction and renovation markets. A total of 29 volumes of classified and indexed Sweet's catalog files are now offered.

The information for these buildings and subsections of buildings has been collected and updated from cost figures of more than 7,500 projects.
