MCAA Unveils Plans For Educational Programs In 1979
Robert Harrison, Chairman of MCAA's Education Committee, has announced that plans for five MCAA-sponsored educational courses beginning in early 1979 have been finalized, with other programs in various stages of development. The subjects center on masonry estimating, labor negotiations, risk management, and cost/profit control.
The courses definitely scheduled include:
► "Risk Management" by Thomas W. Frisby. February 2-3. Michigan State University Education Center. Troy. Mich. (in conjunction with MCA of Detroit), and February 8, to be held in conjunction with the Utah Mason City.
An attorney and former associate professor of law at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Frisby is an expert on construction contracting techniques. He is an adviser to a number of contract.

Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) has announced two recent appointments to its staff-Carol L. Hauswald has been named public relations manager and Terry R. Gallagher becomes manager of data processing services... Col. Woodrow W. Wilson, senior vice president of Metcalf & Eddy and retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has been elected president of the Massachusetts Construction Industry Board.
Ray Lackey Named IMI Executive Director
Washington, D.C.-The Board of Trustees and Advisors of the International Masonry Institute has named Ray Lackey executive director of the organization. Lackey formerly was executive vice president/public relations of Henry J. Kaufman & Associates, Inc., the Washington. D.C.. communications firm that has served as IMI's public relations counsel and advertising agency since the organization was founded in 1970. His appointment was effective December 1, 1978.
In naming Lackey to the IMI post, replacing Neal English, the Board said its action was based on a need to provide the Institute with fresh leadership in order to cope with problems and opportunities facing the masonry industry and IMI in today's construction market.
IMI is a trust fund established by the Mason Contractors Association of America and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen to conduct marketing promotion programs for the masonry industry in the United States and Canada.
Lackey had been the Kaufman agency's account supervisor for IMI, and he served as a consultant during the establishment of the Institute. He has been active with masonry industry accounts throughout his almost 15 years with Kaufman & Associates.
Bierer Named Chairman Of Pittsburgh Corning
The board of directors of Pittsburgh Corning Corp., Pittsburgh. Pa.. has announced that James H. Bierer has been elected chairman of the board. John L. Baldwin succeeds him as president and chief executive officer.
Bierer had been president and CEO of the company since 1968. Baldwin comes to the firm from PPG Industries, Inc., where he most recently served as vice president, contract and supply department of the flat glass division, a unit of PPG's glass group.
A native of Mississippi and a graduate of the University of Alabama. Lackey was a trade magazine editor, trade association public relations staff member, and a correspondent and bureau manager for United Press prior to joining the Kaufman firm.
Rockwood Purchases Horn
Rockwood Industries, Inc., Greenwich, Conn., announced it has purchased the A.C. Horn business from W.R. Grace & Co. The Horn firm wil be headquartered in North Bergen, N.J. and continue to distribute its full line of concrete products, bonding agents. and grouts, waterproofing materials and admixtures.
Rockwood Industries, through its wholly owned subsidiaries, Mineral Pigments Corp. and Davis Color Co.. supplies iron oxide and other inorganic pigments used in the color of concrete products.
Acme Brick Builds Plant
Acme Brick Co., Fort Worth, Texas. the nation's largest brick manufacturer, has awarded a contract to Keller Corp. of Hatfield, Pa. for construction of a new, highly automated brick plant at its Oklahoma City facility.
The new plant will produce the equivalent of 50,000,000 brick per year and bring total production at this location to 75.000.000 units annually.
