2,600 Year Old Special Shape Brick Found in Archeological Dig
The curator of old world archeology at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History has discovered what he thinks are the world's earliest keystone-shaped brick, according to the Brick Institute of America.
Dr. Gus. W. Van Beek came across the brick while excavating a 7th century B.C. Assyrian building in Negeb. 10 miles south of Gaza. He believes the building was the house of the governor of the area. The building has revealed the first barrel vaulting of any kind found in the area.
The brick taper from a width of 15 inches at the top to 12 inches at the bottom and are about 4 inches thick. Van Beek also found a circular mud brick silo dating from approximately 250 B.C., the largest found in Israel so far.
