Chicago Area City Officials Hear "Concrete Facts" About Wood Basements

Approximately 100 building, fire and health officials from the Chicago metropolitan area recently attended a half-day seminar which compared the "concrete facts" about plywood basements and wood foundations with wood industry claims.

The seminar was sponsored by the Greater Chicago Basement Council and presented by the Chicago Masonry Institute and Portland Cement Association.

The All-Weather Wood Foundation System (AWWFS), as it is called, is being actively promoted by various wood industry groups in the Chicago area. Although the AWWFS has been approved by various model building codes, there are several states and many cities within these model code areas that have rejected wood foundations because of questions that have been left unanswered concerning structural integrity, fire resistance, water tightness, and the presence of potentially toxic materials in a home environment.

More information on this subject is contained in a report entitled, "A Critical Evaluation of Plywood Basements and Wood Foundations." For a free copy, write John Dobbs, Portland Cement Association, 5420 Old Orchard Rd., Skokie, IL 60077.

Brick Prominent on Branch Bank

Security Pacific National Bank's newly completed branch in Beverly Hills, Calif., consists of a 17,000 square-foot, white brick, single story and mezzanine building with subterranean parking for 50 cars. Simple arched openings for the entrances and windows pierce the rectangular facade of the classical French exterior, with the brick element also carried into the building interior for design continuity. Gensler & Associates/Architects was the designer, with Jones Brothers Construction Corp. the general contractor.
