34 Attend MCAA Masonry Estimating Seminar
Mason contractors and/or their representatives from 14 states attended the latest MCAA Seminar on "Masonry Estimating For a Profit" at the Sheraton Oak Brook hotel, Oak Brook, Ill., July 20-21. This was the latest educational session on estimating in a new series of courses being conducted throughout the United States and Canada under the auspices of the MCAA Management Institute.
The instructor for the courses is a name familiar to most MCAA members-Jerry G. Pope of Greeley, Colo. Pope, who is the current president of the Colorado Mason Contractors Association, has been responsible for the estimating and bidding of more than $2 billion worth of construction over the past 19 years.
Thirty-four persons, including three women, attended the Oak Brook seminar, bringing the total number of participants in the 18 courses conducted by Pope to over 550. The total attendance for the MCAA estimating seminars since their inception 15 years ago now exceeds 2,200.
The general youthfulness, enthusiasm and widę geographical representation of the participants at the Oak Brook course resulted in a highly productive learning experience over the one-and-a-half day session.
Topics of discussion, which were frequently punctuated by questions and comments from those in attendance, revolved around the widely acclaimed construction manual, Masonry Estimating For a Profit, authored by Pope and now in its second edition (revised, 1979). Each course registrant received a copy of the manual as well as various technical literature dealing with masonry construction.
Keen interest is displayed by seminar participants in the well-filled classroom. Topics of discussion ranged from pricing philosophy and contract negotiations to critical path scheduling and project monitoring.
These smiling ladies seem to be enjoying their learning process! Holding the official course manual, "Masonry Estimating For a Profit authored by instructor Jerry Pope (far left), are Carol Neal, Mt. Prospect, Ill, Judy Foeste, Cape Girardeau, Mo, and Beth Soloff, Nashville, Tenn. Joining in their enthusiasm is Bob Harrison (far right), former MCAA Education Committee chairman and presently a member of the committee.
