Greater Cincinnati Mason Contractors Elect Swedes

David H. Swedes, a member of the executive committee and board of directors of Allied Construction Industries, has been elected president of the Mason Contractors Association of Greater Cincinnati.

Other officers elected were Arthur Jacob of A. Jacob Masonry. Inc., vice president, and Henry Beers, Brickcast, Inc., secretary/treasurer.


People & Events

Bill Hurlburt, plant manager of Acme Brick Co.'s Denton, Texas, operation, is the recipient of the company's first annual Plant Manager of the Year award. Manual Chavez, a veteran of the transportation field, has joined GREFCO, Inc., Los Angeles, Calif., as traffic manager. W. Burr Bennett Ltd., Chicago consulting firm, has been retained by Construction Technology Laboratories to assist in marketing its research, development, advisory and testing services. CTL is the contract research arm of the Portland Cement Association, Skokie, III. Norman R. Cooper, senior supervisor of Antifreeze Technical Service, Union Carbide Corp., Tarryton, N.Y., has been given the Award of Merit by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM).

Joe Schmuck was elected president of the B.C. & Yukon Chapter of the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association during the chapter's recent annual general meeting in Vancouver. Two new additions to the staff of the Canada Masonry Centre are mentioned on page 30.


Michigan Architects Honored with Plaque

Cover Plaque of the April issue of "Masonry" is presented to Kenneth Neumann, FAIA and Sanford Rossen, AIA, principals of Rossen Neumann Associates, Southfield, Michigan. The cover featured their Cleaners Hanger Company office building in a northern Detroit suburb which earned a 1978 "M Award for Excellence in Masonry Design from the Masonry Institute of Michigan. Making the presentation are Frank Soave, president of the Masonry Institute: James Wyatt, executive director, Detroit Mason Contractors Association, and DMCA president Jack Hart.


Masonry Industry People, Buildings Honored in SLC

More than 300 persons from all facets of the construction industry and government were on hand for the 1979 Golden Trowel Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mason Contractors Association of Utah at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

Awards were presented to the people associated with six outstanding masonry buildings selected by a three-member panel of architects. Also honored for their exceptional contributions to the masonry industry were these four individuals:

Earl S. Child, "Outstanding Mason Contractor."

Charles F. Potter, "Outstanding Mason."

Owen Snyder. "Outstanding Mason Tender."

Alvin H. Watkins. Distinguished Service Award.


States Step Up Solar Energy Legislation

State governments have substantially stepped up their level of activity in passing legislation for solar energy use in buildings, according to a survey conducted by the Commerce Department's National Bureau of Standards.

During 1977 alone, 33 states passed 72 separate bills dealing with solar energy use.


Munsell Opens Consulting Engineering Practice

W. Thomas Munsell, P.E., has announced the opening of a consulting engineering practice specializing in masonry at 41550 Rayburn, Northville, Mich.

Munsell, who is president of the Detroit Chapter of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, has had 15 years' experience in theoretical and practical applications of structural engineering. A graduate of the University of Missouri, he formerly was structural engineer for the Masonry Institute of Michigan and is teaching in the School of Architecture at Lawrence Institute of Technology.


Fire Research Report

Major fire research activities of the National Bureau of Standards are summarized in a new publication now available. Subjects range from smoke characterization and toxicology in combustion products to human behavior in fires and fire detection and control.

The 207-page report is based on presentations at a September, 1978 conference which revealed each research project.
