GSA Picks Architects to Finalize Federal Triangle
Harry Weese and Associates, Ltd. of Washington and Chicago has been chosen to develop a master plan for completion of Washington's Federal Triangle. Months of competition ended with the announcement by Jay Solomon, Administrator of General Services, that the design submitted by Weese was judged the winner over those of two other finalists. The Triangle is the area bounded by Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues and by Sixth and Fifteenth Streets, N.W.
Construction Contracts In Near-record Rise
October, 1978 contracts for future construction soared to a near-record rate with large gains posted in all three major categories of work, according to F.W. Dodge Division of McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co. A high level of nonresidential, residential and heavy engineering construction brought the October total of new construction market value to $14.9 billion, a gain of 40% over the same month in 1977.
Bumper Stickers Promote Masonry In Milwaukee area
Pete A. Llanas of Waukesha, a member of Bricklayers Local #8, holds a copy of his winning entry in the masonry bumper sticker contest sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Wisconsin. Llanas' entry was based on the movie "Star Wars with an added slogan, "Masonry Is the Future." The multicolored bumper sticker is being distributed to mason contractors, bricklayers, masonry suppliers and others as a part of the masonry promotion program in the Milwaukee area.
MC & MCA Honors Three
The Minnesota Concrete & Masonry Contractors Association recently presented recognition awards honoring three individuals for their contributions to the industry. The recipients cited at the association's eighth annual banquet in St. Paul were: Don Frantz of Donald R. Frantz Concrete Construction Co. and Bruce Baumann, sales engineer with Con-tech, Inc., for "outstanding service to concrete and masonry construction," and Dick Schumacher of Anchor Block Co. for "outstanding achievement in masonry promotion."
Ceramic Firms Merge
Two of the leading ceramic organizations in the country have merged their marketing operations. Huntington Tile and Pacific Clay Building Products, both owned by Pacific Holding Corp., have been merged into Huntington/Pacific Ceramics, Inc., with corporate headquarters in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. Huntington/Pacific will continue to manufacture and market its wide line of pavers, face brick, "Mini-Brick," and ceramic wall and floor tile. It also has major plans for the introduction of a broad new line of tile products.
