Contest, Banquet Honor Apprentices
Competition was recently held among the 109 apprentices participating in the Annual Phoenix (Ariz.) Bricklayers JA & TC Contest. The local field was narrowed to 40 apprentices during the preliminary competition held the last two weeks of February and first two weeks of March. Included in that number were 10 first-year, 20 second-year and 10 third-year apprentices who competed March 22 at the new training facility at 2601 E. Monroe in Phoenix. The new facility will eventually house the entire program. The annual awards banquet honoring the winning apprentices was held May 10 at the Club Phoenix.

Norman Weiss, who is a professor of architectural conservation at Columbia University School of Architecture, is the principal member of the Restore teaching staff. However, during the course of the year there are a number of renowned lecturers which thus far have included:
Hugh Miller, Preservation Resource Group: Professor J. M. Fitch, founder and director emeritus. Historic Preservation Program, Columbia University: Bernard Feilden, director, ICCROM (Rome Center), Rome, Italy: Martin Weaver, president. Heritage Canada: Lawrence Majewski. professor, Institute of Fine Arts. New York University: Arthur Rosenblatt, vice president and architect, Metropolitan Museum of Art: Seymour Lewin, chemistry professor, New York University: Theo Prudon, architect, The Ehrenkrantz Group; Jacques Dalibard, director. Heritage Canada; Blaine Cliver, regional architect, National Park Service, and Kent Barwick, chairman. New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
This has been a brief accounting of what the Restore program has achieved. As for the future, we are developing an intensive Restore program which would enable those who live beyond easy commuting distance of the New York Metropolitan area to participate in a concentrated version of the present Restore program.
This intensive course could be one week in duration. The curriculum could be substantially the same. Like the present nine-month program, the proposed concentrated course will deal with restoration and maintenance of masonry structures, analyzing the forces of deterioration, cleaning procedures, and techniques for repair and replacement of masonry units.
I have received many requests from around the country for such a program and I believe it will fill a need, broadening the impact of Restore and making a valuable contribution to the restoration field in cities other than New York.
