Brick Graces New Koll Headquarters
The Koll Company, a West Coast general contractor and real estate developer, has relocated its headquarters to Koll Center Newport, Newport Beach, Calif. The exterior of the building complements the other structures already completed within the park by featuring an exterior of fired brick and black invisa-wall glass. The 26,000-square-foot, two-story facility was designed by Langdon & Wilson, with Argan-Bright & Sons, Santa Ana, Calif., the mason contractor.
Desert Environment Simulated in Test Of Solid Block Masonry Building
A new energy research project is underway in the three-story environmental chamber of the Center for Building Technology in Washington, D.C. Extreme temperatures are being generated and contained within the chamber as part of a cooperative industry-National Bureau of Standards research undertaking to verify the thermal characteristics of a specially built prototype desert building.
A unique solid block masonry building has been constructed inside the chamber and is being subjected to temperature conditions representative of the climate in Saudi Arabia, where daily temperatures range from 79-116°F in the summer and 60-85°F on winter days. The temperature and humidity will also be adjusted to reflect somewhat different conditions typical of some regions in the southwestern United States.
The project is a joint effort sponsored by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, a prominent architectural/engineering firm, in association with King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia. Among those participating in the project are the Brick Institute of America, National Concrete Masonry Association, and Dow Chemical Co.
Plasticrete to Establish One-Stop Center for Masonry Materials
A real estate transaction which marks the first major thrust of Plasticrete Block & Supply Corp. into a new marketing program in the Hartford (Conn.) area has been announced by Richard A. Allen, PBS president.
The property is a two-acre rectangular tract with 200-foot frontage at 389 Ledyard Street, near exit 27 off Interstate 91. Plans call for demolishing the old cement block manufacturing plant on the site and building a new structure of some 12,000 square feet to serve as a warehouse, wholesale and retail outlet, customer service center and showroom.
"Concrete masonry for many reasons will be one of the leading materials of the future, both for buildings and for landscaping use," Allen explained. "This new outlet- a one-stop center for masonry materials, supplies, tools, product information and how-to directions-will serve as a pilot for other such centers now on the drawing boards."
