Chicago Masonry Council's Seminars
For Architects, Engineers Successful

Gratifying turnouts spelled success for the two seminars for architects and engineers presented recently by the Metropolitan Chicago Masonry Council on consecutive days in two Chicago area locations.

The sessions, identical in format, focused on "Masonry Innovations in Energy, Art and Technology." The speakers panel was composed of Lewis W. Gleekman, Ph.D., president of Materials & Corrosion Engineering Services. Southfield, Mich.; sculptor Mara Smith, and Jay McGrew, Ph.D., president of Applied Science & Engineering Co., Englewood, Colo.

Dr. Gleekman discussed the basic conditions necessary within wall systems for corrosion to occur and the results of corrosion on fasteners, ties and metals used in conjunction with metal stud/brick veneer systems.

Gleekman maintains that in the steel stud system, under the worst conditions of environmental service, there is a loss of holding power of the self-tapping screws in galvanized studs in approximately seven years. Under ideal conditions, the life of self-tapping screws is greater than 20 years, he said.

Mara Smith, who has received international attention for her brick panel sculptures on the walls of the Loews Anatole Dallas hotel, showed slides of the design and execution of this impressive art form (Masonry, July, 1979). She has since been commissioned to carve brick murals for the new Hamilton Lakes project under construction in the Chicago suburb of Itasca, III. (Masonry, August, 1980). The hotel/office complex is being developed by Trammell Crow, builder of the Loews Anatole, where MCAA convened for its '80 International Masonry Conference.

Dr. Jay McGrew discussed "Energy Conscious Design for Chicago," which incorporated his recently concluded study of integrated heat flow in windows.
