"Brickwork In Italy" Goes to U. of I.
The University of Illinois' Department of Architecture at Chicago Circle Campus was the recent recipient of the educational slide presentation Brickwork In Italy produced by the International Masonry Institute. Developed by Prof. Ambrose Richardson, FAIA, of the Department of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, the collection includes more than 500 35mm slides numbered and arranged into 10 series by subject matter. The slides trace Italian building achievements through 15 centuries (Masonry, May, 1981). Walter Laughlin (left), president of District Council #1 of Bricklayers of Illinois and president of BAC Local #21, Chicago, is shown presenting the slides to Thomas Beeby, head of Illinois' Architecture Department.
ENGINEERING MODULES
continued from page 8
The second module focuses in more detail on the composite behavior of masonry units and mortar materials, and demonstrates through laboratory testing procedures that masonry can be rationally engineered in the same sense as steel, concrete and wood.
Robert Beiner, IMI's director of engineering, notes that the new modules represent an important step by IMI to give future engineers a well-rounded understanding of materials and an improved ability to evaluate a design problem and select the materials that would best fit the design parameters.
Beiner adds that "broader knowledge on the part of our engineers-combined with the top skills of mason contractors and their union craftsmen on masonry jobs-will go a long way in furthering excellence of engineered construction throughout the U.S. and Canada."
Producing masonry-related educational materials that will aid various facets of the building industry is one of the major activities of IMI, a labor-management trust fund serving as the market promotion arm of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen and the Mason Contractors Association of America.
IMI's administrative and technical staffs are working with consulting educators to develop additional material in the engineering education project-possibly a third module focusing on design.
