OHIO DESIGN AWARDS
continued from page 21
All the winning architects were honored equally for "excellence in masonry design." For Munger, Munger & Associates, it was the firm's first award in the five years of this program. The other three firms honored now have a total of three awards each.
Sandstone panels backed up with concrete masonry units are the masonry components of the three-story addition to the office of Blue Cross of Northwest Ohio on Sylvania Ave. in Toledo. The 75,000 sq. ft. addition was completed in June, 1980 at a cost of $5.3 million. The exterior design also includes the use of bronze reflective glass to mirror the trees and enhance the building's setting on its heavily wooded site. The addition was designed to complement the existing building, also of native Ohio sandstone. According to the architect, the match between the old and new sandstone was quite remarkable, in spite of the 11-year difference in the times the stone was quarried. A two-story skylighted atrium space connects the new building to the old. To maintain the warmth of the exterior, the sandstone facade was continued into this interior court.
