Canadian Group Travels to U.S. to Inspect Terra Cotta "Transplant" Job

Kenneth J. Eshbach, president of Eshbach Brothers Inc., a mason contracting firm based in Reading. Pa., reports that as a result of the article on his terra cotta relocation project that appeared in the July/August, 1983 issue of Masonry ("Masonry Restoration Revitalizes Downtown Reading, Pa."), three persons from Canada visited him in December for a personal inspection of the work.

Eshbach was responsible for "transplanting" a turn-of-the-century Beaux Arts building facade from a demolished building to another location in Reading's business district.

The terra cotta facade of the former Reading News Building now graces the front of a bank in downtown Reading. The doorway on the right was redesigned to match the doorway on the left.

The terra cotta, brick and marble units were dismantled, piece by piece, from the original structure, then were coded, cleaned and repaired before being reinstalled at a new site as the facade of a bank's operations and communications center.

The project generated interest from Stan E. Radway and James E. Kerrison of the Webb, Kerafa, Menkes, Housden Partnership and Bruce Pickersgill of Campeau Corp., who traveled to Reading to gain first-hand information about the job. The Toronto group is planning to relocate a terra cotta building in Canada.

Eshbach says he will show any interested persons what his firm has accomplished as a service to masonry promotion.
