SOLPAS continued

Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories, New Mexico. The Institute developed the new program in conjunction with Harvey Bryan and Charles St. Clair of the Joint Program for Energy Efficient Buildings & Systems, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

According to Robert Beiner, IMI's director of engineering, "The SOLPAS manual explains how to use the program easily and effectively. With SOLPAS, the designer can use a hand-held calculator to maximize the effects of various solar strategies-in a fraction of the time that would be required by manual procedures."

SOLPAS is the initial step in IMI's long-range program of providing computer software to simplify the masonry design process. Future programs will cover a wide range of areas, including structural design, estimating, project management and energy analysis.

The cost of the 120-page SOLPAS users manual is $40. The SOLPAS program will fit on four magnetic cards, and purchase of programmed cards can be made upon request.

SOLPAS may be purchased from the International Masonry Institute, 823 15th St., N.W., Suite 1001, Washington, D.C. 20005.

Cost-Estimating Reference System Published

A four-volume series of cost-estimating guides to determine the cost of 1984 construction projects has been published by McGraw-Hill's Cost Information Systems Division.

The integrated reference guides, Construction Cost Information from Dodge, provides contractors, architects and engineers with reliable information covering 12,000 different building materials, labor rates for 22 building trades, and thousands of actual project listings.

The information is derived from McGraw-Hill's F. W. Dodge database of construction cost information, said to be the largest in the world.
