Jacob Elected President of Cincinnati UMA
Gregg Jacob, vice president of Art Jacob Masonry, Cincinnati, Ohio, has been elected president of the Unit Masonry Association of Greater Cincinnati. Other officers elected were Nick Weisbrod, Ervin Weisbrod & Son, vice president, and Lou Mulhofer, Reading Concrete Products Corp., secretary/treasurer.
National Lime Promotes Gutschick and Potter
The National Lime Association, Arlington, Va., has elevated Kenneth A. Gutschick from vice president & technical director to executive director, and Thomas L. Potter from government relations director to director of administration.
Gutschick has been with the association since 1956, serving in various executive capacities. He holds a master of science degree from the University of Chicago and was an instructor in geology at the University of Notre Dame.
Potter joined the association in 1981 and before that worked with the Portland Cement Association in government affairs. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from Harvard University.
Armstead Heads Colorado Mason Contractors
The 1983 president of the Colorado Mason Contractors Association is Richard L. Armstead, head of R. L. "Dick" Armstead Masonry, headquartered in Boulder.
A native Coloradan, Armstead became a professional cowboy on the rodeo circuit at age 17 and continued as such until he was 42. His specialty was bullriding.
He became an apprentice bricklayer and learned the trade under the instruction of long-time Boulder-area mason contractor Ray Harper. He began mason contracting when he was 20 and has been in business since then.
Within the industry Armstead is a founder of the Colorado Masonry Guild and a trustee of the Colorado Masonry Institute and the Masonry Advancement Program. He also was a trustee, vice president and a Negotiating Committee member of the Colorado Mason Contractors Association, and currently serves on the Education Committee of MCAA.

Philip P. Reynolds has joined Glen-Gery Corp., Reading, Pa., as manager of brickwork design services. Paul Victor Johnson, 79, a retired ceramics engineer with the National Bureau of Standards and the Structural Clay Products Research Foundation, died February 9 at Anne Arundel General Hospital in Annapolis, Md. MCAA secretary Jerry Dufour and Iowa member Charles Seedorff and his wife attended the recent convention of the Minnesota Concrete & Masonry Contractors Association in Minneapolis.
The Perlite Institute, New York, N.Y., has announced the addition of Robert Lundberg to the Institute staff. A graduate of the Polytechnic Institute of New York with a degree in chemical engineering, Lundberg will serve as technical representative. M. D. Henery has been promoted to executive vice.

Cavity Walls Discussed at Dayton Seminar
The Masonry Institute of Dayton held its first breakfast seminar May 12 at the Marriott Inn in Dayton, Ohio. A slide program on cavity walls was presented by Donald Woodland, P.E., of the Brick Institute of America.
Housing, Public Works Construction Rise
Strength in homebuilding and public works construction carried the recovery of the construction industry another step forward in March, reports the F. W. Dodge Division, McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co. The March total of $16.2 billion of newly started construction of all kinds continued on page 25.
Cook/DuPage County MCA Holds Annual Smoker
The Mason Contractors Association of Cook/DuPage County, Ill., held its annual smoker April 19 at Ripples Restaurant in Darien. Approximately 100 Chicago area mason contractors attended.
Radio/TV personality Bill Berg, the radio voice of the Chicago Blitz in the United States Football League, was the guest speaker. Al Wendt, president of the association, and Paul Schroeder, executive secretary, co-hosted the program.
