Al Isberner Receives ASTM's Voss Award

Albert W. Isberner, Jr., a consulting engineer based in Skokie, Ill., is the 1985 recipient of ASTM's Walter C. Voss Award. Isberner was honored for his contributions to engineering knowledge and practice through his research in the areas of materials design, construction and performance of masonry mortars.

The Voss Award is presented to an engineer or scientist for distinguished contribution to knowledge in the field of building technology.

Isberner received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1953, and has been a consulting engineer to the concrete, masonry and portland cement plastering industries since 1981. Before that he was with the Portland Cement Association for 15 years as senior and principal research engineer.

NOTABLE QUOTES...

In a recent speech before meeting planners in Washington D.C., Henri Lewin, executive vice president of Hilton Hotels Corporation, treated the audience to these observations:

"We live in the best country in the world. The Gross National Product (GNP) in the first quarter of 1984 reached 3.8 trillion. How much bigger is that than Russia's 1.8 trillion? So we're only twice as big. Isn't that terrible?"

"How about Japan? They tell us about the 1.5 exchange in U.S. dollars. Yet we are still the biggest economy machine ever seen in the entire history of the world."

"Regarding productivity per worker, it is a slogan when somebody tells you it is Japan. Our people produce more-22 percent than our nearest competitor, which happens to be Japan."

"Our workers produce more than the Germans, Japanese, English, French, Canadians, Australians, Russians... you name them. We have never lost that position in 45 years. It is incredible to hear this garbage that our productivity is gone. We have it!"

"Some of the buy-American programs aren't a matter of self-interest. They are a matter of national defense and economic survival."

"There's plenty of intelligence in Washington, but they don't exercise it because they would rather make a political decision rather than a business decision. In Washington they say, "Never spit on a man's face unless his mustache is on fire."
