U.S., Canadian Stone Masons Have Chance to Work, Study in France
A fellowship program that will enable apprentices and young journeymen stone masons from the U.S. and Canada to work and study in France under the tutelage of master stone masons has been announced by a U.S. support group of French historic building preservationists and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen (BAC).
The program was announced jointly in Paris and Washington by Michele le Menestrel, founding president of Friends of Vieilles Maisons Francaises, and John T. Joyce, president of BAC.
While the program will initially concentrate on stone masonry and sending U.S. and Canadian craftsmen to France, it is expected also to provide opportunities for French masonry craftsmen to come to the U.S. and Canada to study brick and tile craft skills.
The program calls for Friends of Vieilles Maisons Francaises and BAC to share equally in the financial support of an annual fellowship. The Bricklayers Union will select an apprentice or young journeyman stone mason for the fellowship based on qualifications and interest.
"The craft of stone masonry and techniques for the preservation of historic stone buildings is highly developed in France," Joyce said. "French craftsmen have much to teach us. We believe that bricklaying is at present more highly developed in the U.S. and Canada than in France, and we look forward to expanding this program soon so that French masons can come here and work and learn with us."
