Construction Mediation
Sets Record in 1984
A record number of construction cases were filed with the American Arbitration Association in 1984, according to Michael F. Hoellering, AAA general counsel.
In a report made at the annual National Construction Industry Arbitration Committee, Hoellering said for the year ending December 31, 1984, 3,150 cases were filed compared to 2,675 for 1983. The total value of claims and counterclaims filed was $520 million, representing an 11% increase over the previous year's total of $466 million. Hoellering said both the number of cases and the dollar amount involved were the highest recorded by the Association.
For the first six months of 1985, 1,802 cases were filed with claims and counterclaims valued at more than $357 million. The indications are that caseload activity for 1985 will continue to keep pace with and perhaps exceed that of 1984, Hoellering said.
The greatest number of cases filed in 1984 were in the $10,000 to $50,000 range. This represented a 32% increase in this category over 1983. Some cases were considerably larger; 56 filings exceeded the $1,000,000 mark. Of the 26 AAA regional offices, the most cases filed were in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Miami.
Reporting on the emergence of mediation as an alternative method of dispute resolution, Robert Meade, vice president of case administration for the AAA, said 39 cases had been received in 1984 and 1985 (up to October 1). The amount of the claims ranged from $9,382 to $28,000,000. A settlement has been reached in 29 cases. Meade noted that 20 of the cases were filed in the San Francisco office.

Hyster Offers Brochure
on Business Approach
In the mid '70s, unbeknown to many observers of commerce and industry, the groundwork was being prepared for a dramatic change in the basic approach to the design, development and production of durable goods. The pioneers in these methods, it has since become clear, were the Japanese.
But one American company was paying close attention and explains it all in an easy-to-read illustrated brochure that outlines the transformation required to move a company from traditional industrial methods to a place of prominence.
