Apprentices Build Brick Fences at
Museum of Science & Industry
Bricklayer apprentices of IUBAC Local #21, Chicago, with their instructor, Bob Nudd, recently completed building ornamental brick fences and period masonry wall cross-sections at Chicago's Museum of Science & Industry's "Architecture In The City" exhibit. The exhibit is aimed at the lay public, especially children, and has numerous strategies to interest its varied audience. The exhibit is expected to be on display at the museum for a period of 10 to 12 years. Only time will tell how many future architects will be exposed to this exhibit and be influenced to design with masonry.

Just as Bob Nudd was the instructor for the exhibit, he related that during his own apprenticeship he worked for a contractor laying clay tile partitions for the entrance to the U-505 exhibit. The U-505, a German submarine captured by the Americans during World War II, is a popular display at the museum. Said Nudd, "You start out as a young apprentice laying clay tile partitions and a couple of decades later you come back to the same place as an instructor for a group of apprentices and lay up another exhibit. It's a small world."
