Fluted Block Create Interesting Facade for Arizona Warehouse Complex

Sunlight plays across the richly textured facade of the Star of India complex in Tempe, Ariz., creating an ever-changing look. To add design interest to the long, unbroken wall surfaces, architect Dwayne G. Lewis, AIA, specified dark tan, fluted concrete block. The integrally colored units were manufactured by University Block Co. of Phoenix, using Bayferrox iron oxide pigments made by Mobay Chemical Corp., Pittsburgh, Pa.

Color-matched mortar helps to disguise the seams between the block. Installation of the entrance circle was preplanned so that the block would fit flawlessly with the bonding reinforcing block.

WASTED PHOTOCOPIES EQUAL 47 ROUND TRIPS TO MOON

Nearly two out of every five office photocopies are unnecessary. A recently completed survey showed that 37 percent of all copies made on office machines are not needed or are wasteful. This means that out of the estimated 350 billion photocopies that will be made this year, some 130 billion will be wasted.

The study, developed for Accountemps, an accounting, bookkeeping and data processing temporary personnel service, was conducted by an independent research organization and was based upon interviews with vice presidents and personnel directors of 100 of the country's 1,000 largest companies.

To illustrate the size of this waste, Accountemps vice president Marc Silbert noted that "laid end to end, 130 billion copies would stretch more than 22 million miles, or the equivalent of 47 round trips to the moon."
