This amount also included a calculation of the cost of absenteeism, accidents and lower productivity caused by drug and alcohol abuse.
The survey found 11 potential responses of employers to substance abuse among their employees:
* establish an Employment Assistance Program (EAP) to help troubled employees;
* publish a company policy on substance abuse;
* supervisory training;
* labor/management agreements;
* health promotion programs;
* search and seizure;
* testing;
* prevention/education programs;
* safety programs;
* liaison with law enforcement agencies; and
* employee rehabilitation.
Of the employers surveyed, only 17% had EAPs, and only 14% had rehabilitation programs.
CSI Elects Officers
The Constitution Specifications Institute (CSI) has elected its officers for fiscal year 1989. They are: Weldon W. Nash, Jr., president: S. Steve Blumenthal, president-elect; Jane D. Baker and Gordon E. Bosl, vice-presidents (professional) and Larry Brooks, vice-president (industry/associate). Elected secretary was Robert Johnson with Dale C. Moll being chosen treasurer.
Patent Receives Award
Patent Scaffolding Company, A Division of Harsco Corporation, has received the University of Tennessee's Institutes Achievement Award for Excellence in Continuous Quality Improvement Through Statistical Management.
Patent is one of four companies to receive the coveted award presented at the Annual Institutes Achievement Conference held September 7 through 10, 1988 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Name Conway ASTM Fellow
John T. Conway, superintendant of quality control with the Santee Cement Company (a subsidiary of Dundee Cement Company) In Holly Hill, South Carolina is a 1988 recipient of the ASTM Award of Merit.
Conway, received the award June 29, 1988 in Baltimore, Maryland at ceremonies hosted by ASTM Committee C-12 on Mortars for Unit Masonry. He was cited for continued and outstanding service to both Committees C-12 and C-1 on Cement, through scientific and practical contributions to those product standards pretaining to chemistry, research masonry cements, and mortars as specifications and methods of test.
Call For Papers
Papers are needed for a symposium on Masonry: Components to Assemblages to be held December 5, 1989 in Orlando, Florida. Sixth in a series, the symposium is sponsored by ASTM standards-writing Committees C-7 on Lime, C-12 on Mortars for Unit Masonry, and C-15 on Manufactured Masonry Units.
The purpose of the symposium is to exchange concepts, information, and experiences in the many masonry related areas. Papers are invited on the following subjects: materials, components, assemblages, maintenance design, construction, performance, restoration/rehabilitation, test methods, specifications, compatibility, research, aesthetics, economics, and techniques.
Prospective authors are requested to submit three copies of a one-page abstract, a title, and the ASTM Paper Submittal Form no later than December 1, 1988 to Dorothy Savini, ASTM, 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. For Paper Submittal Forms, contact Ms. Savini at 215/299-5413.
