# Legislative Conference

The Associated Specialty Contractors (ASC) Legislative Conference will be held April 23-25 (Sunday-Tuesday) at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, D.C. The 1989 theme is "Advocacy for Today." # Cincinnati Elects Hester

Steve Hester, president of Miter Masonry Contractors, Inc. has been elected president of the Greater Cincinnati Mason Contractors Association. Additional officers are: Ron Jacob, vice president, and Jim Flach, secretary/treasurer.

# Arbitration Claims Rise

Construction arbitration cases filed with the American Arbitration Association in 1987 exceeded those for the previous two years according to Michael F. Hoellering, AAA General Counsel.

From January 1987 to December 1987, the AAA handled 4,584 construction arbitrations, compared to 4,317 in 1986 and 3,735 in 1985. Most claims fell into the range of $500,000 or below, but 121 cases involved amounts from $500,001 to $1,000,000, while 117 were for sums over a million dollars. The AAA's heaviest construction caseload was in Los Angeles with 509 cases. Other cities with heavy caseloads were Boston, San Francisco, Somerset, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C.

# Announce Model 1048

The Pettibone Extendo Model 1048 will be introduced for the first time at the MCAA Conference, March 9-14. The Model 1048 is the first Extendo designed to lift 10,000 lbs. and have a 48 foot lift height. The Extendo will be equipped with a 100 HP Cummins engine, Clark transmission and Rockwell axles. Other features include four-wheel drive and four-wheel steer.

# PCA Names Barney V.P.

Because of staff retirements and restructuring, the Portland Cement Association (PCA) is making several key management changes effective January 1, 1989.

Dr. George Barney will become Vice President for Market Development. Dr. Barney has been with PCA since 1970, most recently serving as Director of PCA's Engineering Services Division. As vice president, Dr. Barney will oversee and coordinate PCA programs in national accounts, engineering and codes, field services, public works, and marketing information services. Dr. Barney holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Tufts University and master's and doctor's degrees in structural engineering from Northwestern University.

# New Plant In Illinois

Marseilles Brick Company of Marseilles, Illinois has announced the construction of an extruded brick facility that will produce 62 million brick per year to start with, increasing to 300 million annually in later phases of the project. The officers of the firm are: Thomas A. Volini, James R. Johnson, Jack L. Bergman, Richard F. Hatzer and Martin J. Spicer.

This will be the third manufacturing plant in Illinois, a state that had 40 brick companies at one time.

Marseilles will produce only F.B.X. in color ranges up to 40 with varying textures.

# NCMA Nominates Horn

Harry Horn, president of Devening Block, Inc., Columbus, Indiana, has been nominated as 1989 chairman-elect of the National Concrete Masonry Association. NCMA's Executive Committee voted unanimously at its Nov. 18 meeting to forward Horn's nomination to the board for consideration at the February 1989 meeting.

# Announce Awards Program

Architects from around the country are invited to participate in the Brick in Institute of America's first Brick Architecture Awards Program. This competition is the first of its kind to honor outstanding brick projects. The deadline is March 31, 1989 for architects to see how their best brick work stacks up against the competition.

Any project submitted must have been completed after January 1, 1983 and must use brick as its dominant material. This includes both residential and non-residential construction; extended-use projects; and restoration projects where at least 75 percent of the new construction material is brick.

Each of the four 1988 seminars set record breaking attendance records, with the Boston meeting topping the list at 97.
